Automatic updates are hung.It says installing 5 of 8 uppdates for the last three hours. Shut off machine and when I start it back up, it comes to the same point. Unable to move from that screen. How can I end the this auto update ?

If you don't have installed SP1 and SP2 instead install so much hotfixes which they candisturb each other I recommend install service packs standalone versions from Microsoft Download Center (not from Windows Update) http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/229199-download-available-standalone-vista-sp2.html
relate to remains hotfixes,generall leave defaultly rule installation.If still you have problem with hotfixes make sure do you have any hotfix for Malicious Software Removal Tool - I know from my experience hotfixes to this soft many time disturb update process,in this case first install only one hotfix for Malicious Software and next remain hotfxes with default rule.If you still have issue with WU then reset WU components in aggressive mode How do I reset Windows Update components?
