Problem updating Vista....

Hi guys and girls,

I've had a few problem's with my computer since building it a few years ago and i've managed to bear the brunt of them, but the one that I've never been able to fix has finally got me. I can't seem to update Vista! I got a new game today Order of War, which requires Service Pack One, so I did the what was needed, I went into my Windows Update and asked the program to update my computer, 106 important updates downloaded and installing, then comes the part I didn't want to see, it tells me the updates were downloaded but not all were able to be installed, about 2 of them got installed! So I restarted, and done it again and still nothing  I have a genuine copy of Windows Vista x64 and any help would be grately appriciated!

PS. I did download the service pack from the microsoft site and tried to install that but i got an error 0x8007000D and followed that through on the windows troubleshoot guide

Probably you have something corrupted in WinSxS folder.Depends what kind of damages you have solution for you is to fill missing/corrupted files or repair installation.

1.Run cmd.exe with admin rights (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type

sfc /scannow

when it finish prepare report from SFC command

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

On your desktop appear sfcdetails.txt file

2.Run Readiness Tool http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=f6f353c0-d00e-43e7-97ef-0feefc7ff064

This tool will create report in CheckSur.log file which is stored in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.Maybe you will have luck and SFC tool and Readiness Tool will fix this errror automatically,if not attache sfcdetails.txt and CheckSur.log to post

the command starts, then
stops at 22% complete, then breaks out saying...
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

What next?

Filtered your CBS.log:

View attachment r1.txt and View attachment r2.txt

in the second one you have:

Probably you have corrupted these components

C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-setupapi_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16609_none_8f36b928816c9ea9

Try to fix,but due to sophisticated permissions the best way to do that through Vista DVD,if you don't have Vista DVD use instead Vista Recovery Disk Create a Recovery Disc

1.Download attached to post FixPacks.zip file -in zip file is packed Packs folder -you have to unpack it and place directly on C: exactly as I show below:

17045d1257709937-updates-fail-load-error-packs.png

2.Boot Vista DVD (if you don't have Vista DVD instead use special recovery disk )
Choose language>>Repair Computer>>WinRE>>command prompt

and type:

robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS
del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

3.Run system normally and again repeat sfc /scannow command

robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS

next press ENTER key, wait until it finish and next type

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

and press ENTER key

mmm ok, done the two commands sperate, then ran the sfc\ scannow, again the scan got to 22% and stopped.

I went into Logs and checked the CBS file and it was updated from going through the previous process you mentioned...

Try this one:

Run cmd.exe with admin rights (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\

+restart

If it fail too, restore system http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76256-system-restore-undo.html
(the best way choose the oldest checkpoint) or try repair installation http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Well i tried that and i got operation complete and restarted. Flavius, you only told what to do if it failed, what do i do now that it completed and restarted? Im guessing that doesnt fix the problem as i still cant run an sfc scan, still stops at 22%...
