Windows Update Won't Open

    Windows Update Won't Open

    I am running Vista 64 bit w/ SP2 and I am having trouble with my Windows Update. When I select it to run a box opens and closes immediately and nothing happens. I can't get Windows Update to run. Please help.

    First, lets make sure you are using a method that works. Go to search and type windows update. At the top of the menu, you will see windows update, click. Then on the next screen you see at the upper left, check for updates. Click on that.

    Let me know what happens.

    Richard....thanks for trying to help me.
    I followed your steps and when I hit the windows update I get a box that stays open of a half second and goes away. I don't get another screen.

    That could be caused by a number of reasons, most are easy to solve. Try this one first. Do a disc, clean. Click on computer icon, right click on c drive, click on properties, then do a disc clean up.

    OK, I have done a disk cleanup on the c: drive. Problem still here. WHat would you like me to try next?

    First go to the desktop, right click and then refresh. Then try it.

    If it still does not work try the link below. If it still does not work, post the information and I will help if I am still available (getting late here) or someone else will.

    Try this. Its from MS, it should work

    How do I reset Windows Update components?

    Sometimes to make the remedies take effect,it is necessary to reboot.

    In case the above does not work try these remedies.

    This is not a big problem do not do anything, unless you understand what you are doing. Before doing anything else make a system restore point. Sometimes trying to fix a small problem makes a big one.

    When I return tomorrow, I hope to see your next post with a big and that it is fixed.

    After each step, be sure to refresth. Right click on the desk top and refresh.

    I tried the fixes w/ no luck. One other piece of information: when I go to control panal security turn off/on windows auto updater i get the following error message:

    windows cannot find shell::::{26ee0668-a00a-44d7-9371-beb064c98683}\10\::{36eef7db-88ad-4e...\pagesetting

    ANy other thought Richard. Is this looking like a Vista reinstall?

    Import this fix to registry WUS.zip

    +restart

    If it don't help run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type

    sfc /scannow

    when it finish create SFC report;in cmd.exe type

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

    On your desktop will appear sfcdetails.txt,attache it to post.
