Computer stuck at update screen

Hello there

My computer is stuck at the windows update screen when I boot it up. A week or so ago I had some trouble installing a program. Looking for a solution, eventually I found that my windows hadn't been updating for several months. Trying to update manually didn't work and I got an error message. Googling that error message was what brought me to vistax64.com in the first place, and after reading around a bit I managed to determine that I was missing my Windows Update Module (unsure about the exact name). I followed a tutorial that led me into regedit to delete some keys.

Now, to the matter at hand: after deleting these keys and restarting, my windows got stuck at the update screen. It says something like:

"Configuring update 3 of 3 - 0%
Do not turn off or bla bla bla"

for a few minutes, without the percentage changing, then restarts. Problem is, when it restarts it displays the exact same message and does the same thing all over again. So it gets caught in a restart loop.

I have tried booting from my Vista DVD and have tried the startup repair thing, but that isn't any help. I don't have any save points to restore from, nor a backup.

So - the question is: Is there anything I can do about this without having to format and reinstall Windows?

I think there is chance but of course I'm not guarantee it will work

Boot Vista DVD

Choose language>>repair computer>>command promp and type:

ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.OLD

press ENTER

ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.OLD

press ENTER

copy C:\Windows\System32\config\regback\SOFTWARE C:\Windows\System32\config

press ENTER

copy C:\Windows\System32\config\regback\SYSTEM C:\Window\System32\config

press ENTER,and try run system normally

If it will work

I have no clue what you mean. What error code & message did you have? In Vista does not exist Windows Update Module -in this system there are many variety things with very similar name although they are completely different. What tutorial did you use?

Hey, thanks for helping me out :)

My memory was playing tricks on me - it wasn't Windows Update Module, it was "Windows Module Installer". I had error message 80070424 and followed this tutorial: link. After completing that I restarted and tried updating again, but this time I got the error message 8000FFFF. After searching here I came across this thread: link. Which is where I read that i should delete these values:

PendingXmldentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

I only found two of them I think, and deleted them. Then I restarted and was caught in the restarting loop.

I think there is chance but of course I'm not guarantee it will work

Boot Vista DVD

Choose language>>repair computer>>command promp and type:

ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.OLD

press ENTER
I tried this, but it tells me that my system can't find the path. Does this have something to do with there not being any OS to choose from when entering the "repair computer" screen?

Normally none of advices cause such kind of problem .Apart issue with Windows Modules Installer you must to have another undetified problem too.

Missing OS to choose in "repair computer" may suggest you had corrupted registry files (even if you had any checkpoints, unable to use it if you have corrupted registry files -no fine registry files then no repair computer/system restore too),corrupted partition or even physically corrupted disk.

Well, there is no rescue for your system,so I recommend reset the whole MBR disk, create new partitions and before reinstalling OS make sure your disk is fine, the best way use manufacturer tool to diagnose your hdd Bootable Hard Drive Diagnostics - Vox

That's what I was afraid of. MBR = Master Boot Record? How does one reset that? Or do you mean simply clearing the whole hard disk?

I have windows installed on its own partition - can't I just reformat the partition and reinstall windows on it, without having to clear the rest of the disk?

resetting Master Boot Record (MBR) is equivallent deleting all partitions (although from my experience on forum it is not fully true),there are many partitions managers whom can do this

Sometimes formatting partition may not to be enough to fix problem with partitions or hdd, thus I recommend to reset the whole MBR.MBR stores information about your hdd,if anything is corrupted in that, formatting surly will not solve problem.

Theory about MBR is sophisticated Master boot record - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and I also don't know all about it
