SP2 Will Not Install (Lost Will To Live)

I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my desktop computer which has 3Gb of RAM and Windows Update continues to nag me that I need to upgrade to SP2.

I have tried to do so over and over again but every time it fails and I get the error message "ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED (0X80070005)".

Now from my research I gather this error message is telling me that I am trying to install SP2 without sufficient privilidges but I am actually logged in as an Administrator.

Things I have tried as suggested in forums and elsewhere in the internet:
1 I have "Re-armed" Vista - whatever that means. Still SP2 install failed.
2 I have disabled Windows Update, renamed the existing SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION folder and created a new SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION folder, re-enabled Windows Update and still SP2 install failed.
3 I have used subinacl.msi to run a batch file to reset permission settings just in case I was mistaken about my Administrator login but still SP2 install failed!!!.
I do not know what else to do.
4 I have tried installation both directly from the internet AND from the downloaded file.
5 I have tried installing whilst connected to the internet and whilst not connected to the internet.
6 Each time I had disabled any antivirus and firewall software.

Interestingly I cannot run Windows Media Player 11 either. When I try to run it I get the following error message "The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0.6001.7000 where 11.0.6001.7008 was expected. WMP is not installed properly and must be re-installed. Do you want to install the player from the Microsoft website?"

When I select YES the page "http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/resultsForCategory.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=4" opens up in my browser.
When I click on the link entitled DOWNLOAD WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11, I am taken to the page "http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx" where I click on the DOWNLOAD NOW link but that just takes me back to the previous page.

Maybe the two problems are linked.....I just don't know. What I do know is that I have spent 2 whole days trying to sort both problems and have got precisely NOWHERE.

I would appreciate any help.

Install Malwarebytes, and scan for Viruses and then retry. If that doesn't work, disable your Firewall. Lastly if that doesn't work and all else fails, contact Microsoft for support, they offer free support for Windows Vista for a limited time. Check the links below, and Good luck.
