can't update to SP1 or SP2 and a buncha stuff

Hey all, i think i'm kickin a dead horse here but i'm unable to get or update SP1 & 2 on my PC.

    here's my specs:
    OS=Vista
    Hp Pavilion 1730
    AMD 4600+ dualcore 64x2
    2 gigs 5300 memory
    Geforce 9600GT Video card (512memory)
    500 watt PS
i bought this PC 3 years ago with Vista on it. I thought i was getting all the updates i needed from HP. i guess not.
When i go to windows updates, it looks for a minute then comes up with the 80080005 error. the no updates error. ok, so i got a hold of the HP people and they gave me links to do everything to make my horse come alive--AND jump through hoops. it ain't happenin.
i just did sfc /scannow for the tenth time today in CMD (under "run as admin" of course) and i get the error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. So i go in and make sure it's set on manual, and it is.
i copied the SP1 and SP2 to mydesktop and tried to run them. after a while they stop with the error: the connection with the server was reset.
i tried the Fixit module from Microsoft.....

HELP!! my foot is sore from kickin this dead horse....
i need to add some applications and a game for my son. especially Battlefield. it gives me the MS visual c++2005 distributable is needed. it will start to load and freezes.
Do i re-load Vista or is there a fix? thanks BR

I've never been able to get SP1 on my PC. I bought a similar HP with Vista 32 bit pre SP1. I must have tried about 6 times following all the suggestions. After a bunch of boots "making progress" and stuff looking like it's going to go on, then I get the last boot "service pack was not installed.... rolling back."

I gave up and put W7 32 bit on. I have 2 GB ram, AMD dual core 5200+ etc..

My quad core came with Vista 64 bit SP1. No problems. Runs nice and smooth. Usually with preinstalled PCs I have a rule to wait until at least SP1 is already on. But I liked the HP machine so I took a chance. Well, I learned a lot about tweaking Vista!!!

W7 runs great on my dual core. I'd just go with that instead of driving yourself crazy.

thanks, that might be cheaper than getting another PC. tomorrow i was gonna get a Gateway with the quadcore,win7,8 gigs ram, etc. (incometax return) for $650. i hope that it comes with a win7 disk. with the HP, i just have recovery disks. i don't think they will repair what i need---just reformat my hard drive.

i need a faster PC so i'll prolly go for it. but definitely could use a win7 disk for my ailing PC.

Chances are.... You won't receive a Windows disc with a purchase of a new PC. You can contact the manufacturer, and with a little luck they could send you a Windows DVD.

With regards to your SP problem... Have you tried doing a clean install of Vista from the factory recovery image. Sometimes things get a little corrupted, so a clean install prior to installing a SP is a viable option.

My recommendation.... Clean Install windows Vista. Download SP1 and SP2 standalone packages.

SP1 Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

SP2 Download details: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone (KB948465)

If you search online you should be able to find a Windows7 disc image. You can install and evaluate Windows7 for a period of time to make sure it's going to work as you expect on your machine. That's why they give you a grace period before activation.

I would check out some of the Windows7 blogs out there that give step by step how to install for evaluation purposes. By the time the 90 days, or whatever the evaluation period is, goes by, you should know how well it works. Also that gives you some time to save up to buy it.

good idea, might try it. i was a Beta tester last year for Win7 and still use a RC (release candidate) on my dual booting Laptop (with Ubunbtu). although, after 2 hours it tells you you need to backup and be prepared for the worse, should be done by june??. lol, i got a pretty good idea and i like Win7. i like Linux better but can't game on Linux as well and a coupla smaller items.

gonna re-load Vista first after backing up....! still i'm lookin for a newer computer.

This option of error 80080005 (don't mistake with other options of this error code) relate to corrupted TrustedInstaller's viscera in CBS key or in WinSxS folder, that means you have corrupted/missing HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version key or folder whom is pointed by this key (name of this folder depends from update system status and architecture) more discussion is here Cannot update anything, 80080005

It is one of the most terrible WU issues as I've ever met.

As far as I know many times this happend with other issues with WinSxS/CBS too, theoretically sometimes is possible to fix this terrible issue but not always (apart mentioned repair installation, but becuase it is laptop from HP it is impossible to apply for you)
Upgrading to Windows 7 require at least Vista SP1

So if you decide to attempt to fight with this error please follow below

1.run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

    cd /d C:\Windows\WinSxS

    press ENTER

    dir /s /b >%userprofile%\Desktop\log.txt

    press ENTER

on your desktop appear log.txt file

2.Make sure you have this key:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version

if yes please export this key from the registry and save it under any name and show it us here.

    3.Find CBS.log file

All files: log.txt, exported HKLM\...\Version key and CBS.log please attache to post or upload on rapidshare.com
