Hello Yvesj,

Since it's a Microsoft program, they will of course have it be able to be updated through Windows Update as well as manually through the program. It doesn't really matter which option you use to update the program since it will only update from either or and not both for that specific update.

You could also set Windows Updates to not show updates for "other Microsoft programs" by unchecking that option under "Microsoft Update to not have them there.

If you have MSE set to run on a schedule, then you may also have it set to check and install updates then as well.

Hope this helps,

Those are all Definition Updates for MSE. I advise you to let them automatically install if you want protection against the most recent malware. MSE actually does these updates only once per day. Some other security programs do them as often as 3 or 5 times per day.

SAS is a scanner. MSE is a real time security protection program. It needs to be updated all the time because each day thousands of new viruses, trojans and other malware are new on the web.
I don't think the updates used the 3GBs. It is probably the shadows (restore points) that used the space.
Open an elevated Command Prompt and paste vssadmin list shadowstorage into it and hit Enter. Then you can see how much space the shadows have taken (look for allocated for C)
