are automatic updates for windows necessary

I had to reformat my computer again, and now it works great...but i'm wondering if I should install all the windows updates or are they whats possibly causing my problems crashing

It's prudent to install all the updates (though I'm sure some will disagree) the best way is to set WU to the "Check for Updates but let me Choose" option so it can't install any drivers or other "things" that may cause problems.

I install all the Windows OS Updates I'm offered.
