Unable to Postpone Windows Update

My problem is exactly how it sounds in the title. When the Windows Automatic Update rolls around on my desktop, I'm not able to postpone it. The button is not clickable. Which leaves me the option of restarting at that moment or waiting for the timer to go down and have it restart then. I now have to re-export a large movie file because I wasn't able to postpone. I'm able to postpone on my laptop, but not my desktop, so I know it's possible, lol. Anyway I can enable postponing on my destop?

Welcome

Why not change the settings on update. It sounds like you have it set to download automatically. Set it to notify and you can download at your convenience

This works for me:

Control Panel
Security
Windows Update
Turn automatic updating on or off
Download updates but let me choose when to install them
OK

Updates will be then be downloaded invisibly without interrupting you. When you shut down, select "Install updates and shutdown"

Good method, but needs a warning. Dont install all at once. Many have had problems doing that. If the update requires a shutdown, it will do it automatically, if 2 require a shut down it may cause a conflict and problems. Install only one or two at a time.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your message. I had juu's problem when I got my laptop a couple of years ago, updates wanting to install themselves when I'm doing stuff.

With these settings, I find updates download invisibly, install on shutdown, configure on startup, with never any apparent problems at all.

I have always assumed that Microsoft intended this to be a normal pattern of use.
All the best,
Frank.
