Hi, I'm running vista 64bit with SP2 installed (genuine copy) a couple of days ago I noticed the message on the bottom right of my screen saying 'Windows can't check for updates'. I tried checking again and got the following that you see in the pictures.

Thinking it was something that I had installed I tried a system restore...but still get the same message! I tried deleting the files that it says to but that didn't work.

My girlfriend is having exactly the same problem on her Vista 32bit SP2 laptop....her laptop and my pc do not share anything.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

You have a mad face, but it was Mr Fix It fault. I will see if I can find some other solution.

Mr Fix let us both down, so I did this one myself. It is error code specfic and should work.

Nothing help ...

1.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe as admin)

and type sfc /scannow

2.Download & Run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

When it finish find in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder files CheckSur.log and CBS.log files and attache here.Besides find in C:\Windows\System32\config file COMPONENTS ->pack this file to *.zip,*.rar format and all three required files upload on RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

My Computer

Hi, here is what you have asked for:

1- C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

C:\Windows\system32>

2- Checking System Update Readiness.
Binary Version 6.0.6002.22359

Checking Windows Servicing Packages

Checking Package Manifests and Catalogs

Checking Package Watchlist

Checking Component Watchlist

Checking Component Store

I tried to open the CBS.log but it says access denied.

I tried to copy paste the other 40mb file onto desktop and it won't let me, saying another program is using it.

Thanks

My Computer

Your CheckSur.log is OK.

I tried to open the CBS.log but it says access denied.
But it shouldn't.In this case follow below:

1.Boot Installation disc,choose language>>repair computer>>command prompt

and type:

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

press ENTER

attrib -s -h C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR\*.*

press ENTER

del C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR\*.*

press ENTER

attrib -h -s C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.*

press ENTER

del C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.TM*

press ENTER

del C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf

press ENTER

del C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

press ENTER

2.Next run system in normal mode, again run sfc /scannow command
3.Again run MS Fix It from this site How do I reset Windows Update components?

but this time choose option AGGRESSIVE MODE -it's important.
4.Run cmd.exe with admin rights (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type

ipconfig /flushdns

You can now try again install updates,if it's still impossible you have to attache CBS.log and COMPONENTS files to post (this time you shouldn't have any problems with CBS.log)

I tried to copy paste the other 40mb file onto desktop and it won't let me, saying another program is using it.
I forgot on vista it is not so easy:confused: -sorry.Use RegBak tool Acelogix Software - Freeware

to create registry copy. For me concern only COMPONENTS file.

My Computer

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it :)

After repair computer I got this message (see pic) I didn't know what to do so I skipped it and opened the command prompt, I tried the first line of text and it said couldn't find file path (or words like that).

What do I need to do to show my operating system in that box? I clicked on the load drivers but had no idea where to look for them.

Thanks

:confused::confused::confused:

Very strange!

I can only explain in three ways.

1.You are using 32 bit install disk on 64bit installation
2.You have some issue with partition ,disk or controllers
3.Your install disk is corrupted

First try use special recovery disk from this site Download: Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc — The NeoSmart Files

(download & use 64bit version of course

My Computer

Thanks again ;), I have also noticed (after trying something else) that Windows Modules Installer and Trustedinstaller are missing in my Services list.

I'll download that recovery disk now and try it tomorrow :)

Thanks.
