Blue Screen after Windows Latest Updates

    All,
After downloading the 12/12 updates, my computer started to blue screen.
This started with my monitor flickering then proceeded to squirrely lines everywhere and then the "lovely" blue screen came up and shut the system down!!
A got an error message that said Graphics driver stopped working. I have NVidia 9000 series.

After a couple of days of trying to resolve this without a properly functioning monitor and the system crashing during attempted Restores (NOT EASY) . . . I finally realized that this started occurring after the updates. Sooo, I was finally able to restore the system to a date previous to the updates. Guess what? Monitor/graphics are now fine - hmm?

However, after this, I created a manual Restore Point. Primarily for testing purposes. When I went to restore to this point, system would not restore successfully.

    I have two issues:
    1. I'm thinking something is messed up because I cannot perform a proper Restore now.
    2. My computer doesn't have the latest updates and I am afraid to download them.

Can anyone please offer any insight and/or guidance? I'm thinking there is a bug in one of the updates that needs to be brought to Microsoft's attention.

P.S. At least one other user is having an issue too.

    Thanks for your help.

Ok first of all you cannot restore to that point because there is nothing to change and is Unsuccessful. Next go through the updates and check for any that might be related to your Video Card and then right click that and Hide the Update

    Hope This Helps,

Re: Blue Screen after Windows Latest Updates

Well, unfortunately, I have bigger problems now. Computer is down completely now. I was able to get the computer back up for a while. Performed a diagnostic. Hardware is all fine. Which confirms to me this is a software issue.

Computer was fine for a while then the screen started blipping again.

Put in the recovery disc which appeared to restore the system. NOTE: After the restore, the computer said it found new hardware and reloaded my monitor driver. Java also updated itself. This all finished and everything seemed fine.

Went to reboot the system (as I wanted to create a manual restore point and then install the updates again) when disaster struck. Computer came back up, but said machine didn't shut down properly and then the screen turned into a patchwork quilt. Tried doing what I did before with the restore discs and the bootable disc as well. As I can't see "anything" on the screen, I have no idea what it is doing. Tried rebooting a couple more times hoping to get lucky and get to the restore before the screen went haywire, but no luck.

At this point, I have no idea what to do!! I'm accessing the forum from my work computer. Please help!!

    Thanks

    Meltie

P.S. When this originally happened, the screen came up with a message saying to reboot if this was the first time. If it happened again, to go do something in the BIOS. Something to do with timing out?? Computer shut down before I had a chance to write it all down

Re: Blue Screen after Windows Latest Updates

Been thinking about this, researching, and chatting with a few folks.

Here's what I think. I think the graphics card and the system are at war. Soooo, if I remove the Nvidia card and reinstall the original card that came with the system . . . that should give me back the screen so we can resolve the problem. If that works, I can pull the documents off the computer and then fresh install the system if I have to.

Failing that, I will pull the hard drive and hook it up somewhere else, pull the documents off, and then do the fresh install. (thanks Rich - great idea)

If anyone has another idea, please let me know.

I'll update the thread when it's done.

Murphy's Law aka Insult to Injury: I was just about to mirror the system onto my new external hard drive. I was just waiting to make sure I had this issue resolved prior to doing it. If only I'd done this 3 days ago!!! Sheez!! Figures!

Your CPU May have over-clocked or "Timed out" Because of the Graphics card it may be Burnt out I don't know from the Details you have given me. But I would do the Steps you have Said

    Hope This Helps,

Re: Blue Screen after Windows Latest Updates

Okay guys, here's the scoop. Or at least what I think it is . . .

I pulled the Nvidia Graphics card and installed the original card. (have not tried to utilize any games yet to test it's capacity - other things more important at the moment)

Monitor is now functional - thank God!

Ran all the diagnostics tests again through Recovery - all passed

Copied all essential files onto my new external Iomega hard drive (will mirror image the entire system shortly) btw - the Iomega 1TB drive comes with a 3 year warranty, is plug and play, and very easy to use.

System is up and running and appears to be functioning

I will now go and download all the Windows updates - pleeeease keep your fingers crossed for me

    Thanks for the help

    everything is "good to go".

I contacted EVGA, they are the manufacturers of the nVidia card. They have asked me to send them the card. Basically they said it sounds like it is covered under warranty (can't promise until they see it though), and if so, they will replace the card. Pretty cool. So far, very pleased with my customer service experience.
