For some time I have been experiencing problems with this update.

Security Update for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 (KB982158)
Installation date: ‎27/‎08/‎2010 14:03
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070643
Update type: Important
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 that could allow arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. This update resolves that vulnerability.

MS10-036: Description of the security update for PowerPoint 2007: June 8, 2010
Help and Support:
Microsoft Support

This was previously showing an error code of KB957789, later KB951338, before the latest.
This is annoying since it prevents my Virgin Media Security System from working. I have ensured the OSE settings are correct and followed the support threads above but have been unsuccessful in resolving this particular problem.

Office 2007 was pre-installed on my computer and in an attempt to eradicate the difficulty, I have removed this without success in getting rid of this update which appears to be unecessary.

I would appreciate any help you are able to provide.

Hi Flavius

Many thanks for your reply.
I have attempted to re-visit the Office Source Engine but this seems to have disappeared, presumably since I removed Office 2007. I do not use this as I find Open Office perfectly acceptable for my needs.
Is there any way I can stop these Updates from appearing? They are not required since I do not use Office and certainly have no need of Powerpoint.

Many thanks.

If you have uninstalled Office now but still you receive updates for it that means you have incorrectly uninstalled Office.

Try this soft Uninstall Microsoft Office 2007 in Vista and XP | Raymond.CC Blog

to work properly on Vista you have to right click on this tool and choose "run as administrator"

For precaution I'm attaching also official remover How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?
but note if you don't have Office in "Programs and Features" (make no difference uninstaller working or not but must exist) official remover will not work

Hi Flavius

I had no luck with the first link but the second led me to MS Fixit for MS Office 2007. I have previously tried this without success as I found this time. However whilst the update was for for Powerpoint 2007, I thought I would try Fixit 2003. Surprisingly this worked and it found various files to delete. I can only think that my computer did not have MS Office 2007 pre-installed but I got my hands on 2003 somewhere.

The main point is that Updates are now working correctly and as a result, I have managed to enable Virgin Media Security.

A big problem (for me) resolved).

Thank you:D
