Honey, SP1 shrunk my display!

Hi, I am hoping someone will be able to help me with a VERY VERY frustrating problem.

I have a Dell 24" Lcd Monitor that came with my Dell XPS420 computer. It has Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit OS.

Not long after I got it (about 2 years ago) I installed SP1 for Vista and straight away this shrunk the display on the monitor. By this I mean everything on the desk top looks like it has been cut off a 14" display and pasted on to a 24" display. This includes any programs I may run such as Internet Explorer, Word etc... They all look like they want to be displayed on a much smaller screen.

When this occurred I spoke to Dell and Microsoft who both ran me through the whole Display settings thing which did not help at all. Despite me telling Microsoft that I had checked their forums and that there were several complaints from disgruntled Vista users with widescreen monitors who had exactly the same issue, they did not know anything about it.

In the end I had to restore the system to return it to normal. Since then I have avoided updating any Service Pack to avoid this problem.

The issue now is though that I want to load Office 2010 on to my computer but it needs SP1 before I can.

I have downloaded SP1 again and, bingo, the same old problem arises.

Can anyone help me at all? Like I say, changing settings re the display via the control panel etc do not work and do not appear to be the issue. Would SP2 have a patch to fix this?

I have just searched to see if my video card needs an update ( It is an ATI Radeon HD2600XT) and the system tells me it is fine.

Thanks in advance for any help

Which program tells you the display driver/gpu drivers upto date?

Unless ATI is wrong, they just came out with new drivers:
ATI Radeon

Dell doesn't support your model anymore, so they haven't updated their site.

Not sure if SP2 would fix it, but I'd deffinately give it a go.

Hi Patonb,

Thanks for that, I will look into that patch and see what happens. The program that told me my driver was up to date was the Device Manager on my system, so if Dell don't support this anymore I guess this would be incorrect. Thanks again and I will post how I get on
