I was given an HP Compaq Presario C500 that was headed for the garbage because it would not connect to the internet. After running several scans ESET online scanner came up clean. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials and installed SP1, and can't get it to install SP2. I keep getting error code 80070017 / Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I would prefer to reformat but Recovery Manager restarts back into Windows and I have no disks.

Can provide a long list of what has been done if needed including WU Modules (Normal Mode) and WU Components fixes. Permissions point in every which way but the correct way!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Free space is presently @ 42.3 GB of 68.9 GB on C: Drive (started out with 7.3 GB's free space! )
and 4.91 GB free of 5.53 GB on Presario_RP (D)

Specs as follows:
Vista Home Basic
Intel (R) Celeron (R) MCPU
520@ 1.60GHz 1.60 GHz
512 MB RAM
32-bit OS

Denied access to the CBS folder itself though can access CheckSUR.log which I am including along with sfcdetails.

You have corrupted C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f699
folder thus this issue with updates ,I'm not fully sure it's only issue with wcp.dll or with full folder. For precaution I recommend replace all files in this folder.

How to fix:

1.First prepare special recovery disk http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html
and make sure boot order in your BIOS is CD-ROM,C,A
(if you don't know how to to do that then check your computer manual)

2.Download attached to post FixPacks.zip file -in zip file is packed Packs folder -you have to unpack it and place directly on C: exactly as I show below:

wol_error.gif
Click this bar to view the full image.
17045d1257709937-updates-fail-load-error-packs.png

3.Boot burned special recovery disk (if you don't have Vista DVD instead use special recovery disk )
Choose language>>Repair Computer>>WinRE>>command prompt

and type:

robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS

press ENTER

del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\*.*

press ENTER

4.Back to your system and run Readiness Tool again.
5.Try install SP2 from Microsoft Download Center Download details: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - ALL Language Standalone (KB948465)

(not from Windows Update)

WARNING
If my commands return any error then probably you have OS not on first parttion and you have to change drive letter in my commands,in this case you have to check parttions status in diskmgmt.msc (not in explorer). Please let me know if something goes wrong.

My Computer

Hi Flavius,

Thank you for helping me out.

The only disks I have are an UpGrade Vista Home Premium, my Recovery Disks for my Gateway laptop with Vista Home Premium, a Win7 Retail Disk. I'm assuming these are no good for what we need so I'll have to buy a CD-R Disk to Create a Recovery Disk.

I'm sure the BIOS is set to boot from CD first because we used our Win7 Disk to recover from missing bootmanager loop. But I'll double check to make sure.

I'll post back as soon as I get the CD-R and the above accomplished.

Again, thank you Sir!

Donna

One of those two might have the Repair Features:

3.Boot recovery disk
Choose language>>Repair Computer>>WinRE>>command prompt

If either of your disks has the Repair my Computer option, you are sorted!

Ok, for some reason had to go to Computer and click on D Drive to get it to run. I have a display that says Check Compatibility online and Install now. Should I choose install? That'l take me to another display window before actually installing, correct?

No, don't choose Install. Don't worry about the screenshot not having compatibility, but if the Repair your Computer option highlighted is not shown, try the next disk!

Thanks Flavius for the heads up.

I'm having trouble getting it to boot from the CD. I do get the screen that tells me to press any key to boot from CD. It then proceeds into windows.

Takes forever for it to also boot up and shut down. Please bear with me here.

My Computer

Bad news. It will not boot into CD. I double checked the BIOS. Booted fine into CD just 2 days ago when we used this same Win7 disk to repair the bootmanager and also booted into the Knoppix live CD that we have. I can access the disk via computer > c: > setup Windows installer. But there's no option to click for repair.

Going to get a CD-R and access link to create a Recovery Disk. Even if it doesn't work at least I'll have the disk for future use.

I'll continue to see what happens and keep you informed to any progress, if any.

Thank you guys for your time here.

I'm having trouble getting it to boot from the CD. I do get the screen that tells me to press any key to boot from CD.
And here you have to press any key e.g ENTER and it should redirect to WinRE

If it really doesn't work you have to solve this problem too,if you have warranty then contact with manufacturer support.

Of course there is method on allive system too,but there are obstacles with permissions and sometimes files are in use and cannot replace them even if you have already full access to these files thus don't like do that on allive system....

Please try again!

I.Make sure you are able to boot pendrive,if yes you can try use USB bootable instaltion drive http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181538-usb-bootable-vista-installation-flash-thumb-drive.html instead

II.If there is no way to boot anything do that on allive system :sleepy:

then

1.go to

C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f699

folder,takeownership of it

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html

and add your account to have full control.

2.Find in my attached files to post 2 folder x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f699

extract from it all files and replace the old ones in C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f699

3.Remove your account from permissions to this folder restore TrustedInstaller as owner

see:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/159360-trustedinstaller-restore-owner.html

4.Run Readiness Tool again

5.Try again install SP2 standalone version.

Flavius,

Words cannot express how much I thank you for your patience with this matter. This laptop has a very sad history behind it and I fear wasting your precious time. It has had several previous owners that abused it horribly. There is no warranty. I have been working on this laptop since 9/20/10. A computer such as this is a dream come true for me to learn from.

I will keep trying. Promise.

Try to do that on allive system (post 14) and I hope will not be additional obstacles "files in use" or any other.

Oh Flavius,

I need to know. I have found several names on this laptop. The last owner was Pastor Ivy, then there is also the name Steve that showed up in the Users folder. I deleted an acct. named 1st Lady and some folders with the name Will on them. Also the Belarc report said that the owner was ESHA! Is there anyway to get all those names off without reformatting? Can I just create a new acct. for me and get rid of the rest some way without losing control of the system?

I'm presently working out of the acct. known as Pastor Ivy. I was afraid to change the user accts. around.

I was afraid to change the user accts. around.
