Issues installing SP2

After a year and a half of having SP1 installed, I decided to update to SP2. Two months ago, I had used vsp1cln.exe in order to clean up my winsxs folder, and was aware that I wouldn't be able to uninstall SP1. Two months ago I had no need to update to SP2, but times have changed. Is it possible to still update to SP2, or will I have to reformat?

Based upon what I know and the links I gave you there should not be a problem because of that, anyway.

I read both of those sites. Techrepublic says that you can't uninstall SP1 after using the clean up. I tried to uninstall SP1, but was not able to since there were no updates (under programs and features) to uninstall. I also tried to install SP1, but was given the message that SP1 is already installed.

After you used the clean up tool, you can no longer remove sp1
and yes
If you have it already you cannot install again.

Everything, so far, is the way it should be.

After doing some more digging/searching, it seems that the real issue I'm having is with windows update. It doesn't seem to want to download any updates, and is constantly giving me the error 80070422: Windows update has encountered an unknown error. I've read other forums, tried a variety of different things (deleting wu- .dll's, deleting temporary update files, malware/spyware/virus scans) and still can't get it to update. BITS is set to manual, Event log is automatic, Windows update is (started) and set to automatic. Any other suggestions?

Well I finally solved the problem. Out of all of the troubleshooting guides I read, even some from microsoft, there is a service called Windows Module Installer that was disabled. None of the troubleshooting methods recognized Windows Module Installer as being part of windows update; after enabling this service I had no issues with installing SP2, and I have no issues with windows update anymore.

Hello!

Excellent work! Well done!

For future readers, have a look at these two error codes. Look at the winerror.h part:

For both of these errors, refer to this tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/258701-windows-update-error-80070424-a.htmlError 80070424 will likely require you to complete more of the tutorial before a fix is reached, but both are likely fixed by that tutorial.

Good luck!
