No boot up and no video after 1/11 Windows Update 64bit

Haven't found another thread covering this, so I apologize in advance if this question is elsewhere.

Last night I downloaded the 1/11 Windows Update patches for my 64 bit Home Premium OS. Left it alone overnight, and today I have no video.

Questions:
I'm running dual monitors (monitor + television) from the EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+. Could I have toasted the graphics card?

Power off and rebooting doesn't do anything. No beep. Can't get into safe mode or the BIOS. Is this a CMOS issue?

Won't run off boot disc either. What's going on? Any other routes to safe mode?

Thanks.
Brandon

Hi & welcome,

First, How do you know it doesn't boot? Did you watch the HDD activity light & see if it goes throught the procees (Loads of flashing activity).

I would swap the graphics card for a known working one, then see if that boots & displays. If so, delete the hidden graphics card in device manager & then swap them back, to see what that has achieved.

If that achieves nothing (second card is good), I would then suggest the original card is fried.

If swapping the card also fails to? (Don't know why that would be).

Then I think you have toasted your motherboard but that seems un-believable & a little excessive for an update!

As a last thought, try swapping your power supply!

The fact that you can not get into your bios tells me straight away that this is probably not a software issue. List your full system spec, including motherboard revision if you know it.

Do you have an internal speaker connected to your motherboard?

Have you tried booting into the bios from onboard graphics with the geforce card removed?

Are you using usb or PS2 keyboard and mouse?

Here are the specs for my system:

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 mobo + 4 GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz processor
Vista Home Premium 64
EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB video
wireless Logitech mouse with nano USB receiver
PS2 keyboard

Internal speaker usually beeps on boot up, but doesn't now. HD light is blinking and on during "boot up".

Thanks.

Disconnect the HD.
Disconnect 2 sticks of ram.
Try booting pressing the del key to get into the BIOS.
Does this work?
The fact that you are not getting a beep is telling me that the BIOS is not detecting the video card or that the computer may have gone into sleep mode.
If this fails try resetting the bios by removing the battery for 5 minutes.

Still no luck. I've tried the following:

(1.) Re-seated the video card
(2.) Removed the battery
(3.) Reset the bios via jumpers
(4.) Boot with no video card
(5.) Boot with no HD
(6.) Boot with different RAM configurations

Questions:
How do I get video from the mobo's onboard graphics? There's no VGA out.
The HD is no longer blinking, although I can hear it spinning up. Bad drive?
I've been running monitor + TV for about a month and just got metro 2033 as a gift and ran it for a couple hours the day before this happened -- too much to ask of this video card?

My Computer

There is no onboard graphics for your mobo. Try a different graphics card if you can get hold of one.

Thanks for the replies everyone, but I still haven't been able to boot. I replaced the graphics card with a new one, and no luck.

Power on.
HD light blinks, HD spins up.
No beep.
No video signal.

Would an HD failure prevent the bios from starting?

Hi,

Well that all sounds grave.

I think you need to replace the motherboard!

Sent the motherboard back to ASUS and it came back clean with no problems.

I have the system stripped down to CD-ROM, HD, and graphics card and still no boot up.

If I have a BIOS or CMOS issue how can I resolve it?

Thanks.

Hi,

If it came back clean with no issues why do you think you have a BIOS or CMOS problem?

Remove the HDD & then see what you get on screen then.
