simple question

if microsoft security updates, and finds a new def, why does that show up as an optional update? shouldnt it b a recomended update? they usaly r,

I checked my own update history for Microsoft Security Essential definitions and found some to be recommended and some to be optional (and there were more optional than I had expected). I'm not certain why - perhaps it has to do with the severity of the malware involved in the new definitions or whether or not it's a minor update to a reasonably good existing definition versus a major change to the definition or the addition of a new one. Frankly, I honestly don't know but I install all such updates whether recommended or optional (and suggest you do the same) to keep MSE as current and up-to-date and effective as possible. EDIT: See Richard's response below, that's the difference between the two and I imagine it is determined by Microsoft as I just explained.

I hope this helps even if it isn't a definite answer but more like an educated guess. The main point is that it is best and recommended to install all MSE definition updates no matter how they are classified.

The optional Security Essential Updates are ones that will be installed automatically, if you do not install. They are normally definitions

Going back to the updates, it has happened to me. If I dont install myself, they get installed by MSE automatically.

I used to buy books, lots of them. They cost a lot of money. I have found that using the internet for research is better because you use your brain to find the information. If you need anything for reference you can always put it into a word document to reformat it before printing, this will also help to absorb the information in the text.

+1 I bought a programming book to get me started, and that was required, but after that, I just use the internet, but don't get me wrong, that book is well thumbed! Anyway, Word is very good for printing what you need, but if you want lots of graphics on the page, then Print what you Like is the way forward. Save paper & ink printing only what you want « PrintWhatYouLike.com

the tutorial, on the startup programs was very useful. i been trying to figure that out for a while now, after using the tutorial i zip thru it and im moveing a lil faster now. ty u all so much for all the advise.
