configuring updates dont work and start with no warning

My computer keeps turning off with no warning, and I keep losing work, it is trying to configure updates but gets to the end of configuring stage 3 and then says it failed and reverting back. This takes about an hour from start to finish, it used to do this occasionally but now has done it for three days in a row.

When I go to security center this message comes up.

Windows security center - security center cant change your automatic updating settings.

When going into manually change, the windows update page has noting in it except a green shield with a tick in and two arrow drop downs with nothing in them and a drop down with times in it but the rest of the page is blank.

when i go into control panel windows update there is an orange sheild with ! in it and next to it says #element module header text# and underneath #actioncustominstallimportantt and underneath that #actioncustominstalloptionalte the rest of the page is blank. if i click on one of the action------ headers i get to a blank page.

any help would be greatly appreciated and preferably in non technical terms as i am not very cumputer literate.

regards Teresa

thanks for the reply, this has been happening for approximately 18 months so if i restored my computer to then would i lose all my work and programs that i have done and installed since then? i know i should have done something before now but it was not really a problem when doing it occasionally. i have kaspersky antivirus and it runs fine, it has never informed me that i have any problems. would this pick up any malware or do i still need to download the malwarebytes program and run it??
regards
Teresa
