Why o why is Microsoft so slapdash with its updates. The error code I am getting covers everything under the sun and offers no solutions to the problem.
I am so fed up following so many leads from its advice pages but can never get to resolving the problem. Is there anyone anywhere that has overcome this problem.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit IE9.0.1

Thanks

I found out that you can get free support from Microsoft for Windows Update problems (and virus and malware problems) here:

Online Support Services

It requires a Microsoft technician to remote connect to your computer. One spent about an hour and a half last night (most of that time waiting for downloads and installs) and sorted the problem for me. It looked like it was the System Update Readiness Tool which fixed it:

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

Although it may have been a combination of that and some of the steps the tech did before.
