Problem with Configuring Updates!

My computer came with windows vista home premium. It prompted me to restart to finish installing updates, so I did. It has been showing the screen "configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 100% complete" for HOURS now...I thought the computer simply froze so I force restarted it, but it led me to the same exact screen of "configuring updates". I then tried starting in safe mode, and that also led to the same screen....

There is no cancel option, I unfortunately don't have a CD/DVD for re-installation... It is still configuring as I type this thread from my netbook, and I really need my computer to work today...Can anyone please help?!?!?!?!

I thank you ahead of time!

Hello, mine got stuck in that loop once, i went into advanced start up using the tapping of F8 key and got it to do a system restore to before this, see if you can do that , or a last known working config.

I too have experienced this. Followed the advice given above.

Since that time, I download "like" updates in small batches vs all at one time. For example, I download all the security ones in a batch, then all the Office ones in a batch. Anything that is large or I'm not sure of, I do by itself. This is how I found out which update was the culprit when it happened to me. Netframe update was causing my issue.

This next part may sound a little or a lot over the top LOL . . . After I'm comfortable that each batch was successful, I perform a manual restore point. It is tedious and it does take quite a bit more time. For me personally . . . I'm willing to take the extra effort vs the stress of something not going correctly. It's also very easy to restore this way if you don't like what's happening.

Hope it helps.

Thankfully at the time I had a dual boot with XP so all I had to do was boot into XP, research the problem, and then I probably renamed the file.

I want to thank everyone for informative help and kind advice. After a couple of days (of frustration for me) and your continuing encouragement, I finally have defeated that 'endless loop.'

What worked for me was the neosmart.net download to a properly working CD/DVD burner. I initially tried using my old desktop CD drive, but I forgot it was a read-only device and wouldn't be able to burn a copy of the recovry CD. I found a working DVD burner to copy the neosmart.net download correctly.

It took several cold boots on the laptop with the recovery CD together with a "shift F6" followed quickly by "any key" to access the needed restore menu.

I noticed on Google that this "Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete." has been affecting Vista since 2008. It's almost 2012 and this is still causing problems?

Happy Thanksgiving America !:)

That site offers a paid recovery console that is not needed, we already have access to a free bootable dvd//cd version of the recovery console located here : http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html
So, no need to visit that site at all.
Also, this is your first post, you must have been reading stuff here as a guest as you state we have been helping you.
