Hi group,

I tried so many things already, and followed loads of advice from around the net. But no solution so far. The problem is that Windows update won't install 3 updates , it gives error Code 80070490. The updates it errors on are:
KB2641690
KB2620704
KB2588516

One other update keeps reinstalling on every reboot: number KB2633171

I tried so far:

  • standalone installation of failing updates

  • sfc /scannow
  • system update readiness tool
  • MicrosoftFixit50123.msi
  • MicrosoftFixit50202.msi
  • antivirus and malware software find nothing amiss..
  • tried installing updates and fixes with firewall off, antivirus off etc..
I am getting to the end of what i can do here, how to preceed. I will attach the checksur. hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction?

thanks in advance
Moosey

Rut roh, i see you did try that. Dang it, i read your post too fast, but, was familiar with that fix as i fixed a neighbors computer last week using that, If that did not work i was gonna restore her to default OS from her dvd ? Are you willing to try a repair install ? http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Welcome
Here is an idea that is a bit unorthodox, but if nothing else works, give this a try. The upadates seem to be for security, can it be that some virus or malware has possession of your computer and prevents the installation of the updates?
Just a wild thought
but
make a full anti virus scan and then download and make a full scan with malwarebytes. Make sure that both are full scan and have all the current updated virus defintions. I do wish you luck

@richc46: thanks for the welcome, am new here...
So i tried malwarebytes fulll scan on reboot, and avast and some online scanner a few times already... At one point avast said it detected a rootkit, but that was weeks after the update problems began. I let Avast delete the suspicious file, and that was that...

@ Yard Dog ouch, that was exactly the thing i wanted to avoid if at all possible . Was hoping the checksum would lead some vista doctors here to a diagnosis :geek:

You may have to run SFC three times. If they are not repaired, Yard Dogs suggestion is the way to go with the repair install. Not saying that the repair will solve your problem, but it may, and it will fix the SFC problems.

At the rootkit, use free of this to make sure you got rid of it : How to remove malware belonging to the family Rootkit.Win32.TDSS (aka Tidserv, TDSServ, Alureon)?

@Yard Dog hmm the tool finds a locked file. Calls it a suspicious process - medium risk, named SPTD

.. what to do, delete it?

Well, then go ahead and delete it , not necessarily listed as malware tho, and i don't think it would cause these issues, but, if not being used, then get rid of it, you might also want to use latest version of Ccleaner and rid yourself of any temp files and such .
