Windows-Update service is not active

Hey Everybody,

Currently I am having a lot of trouble with my computer. I thought it would be clever to run windows updates, until I got the following message:

'Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer'.

I have restarted my computer multiple times (many of them weren't done by me, as my computer suddenly shut down after this message: Check the Security of your computer')

When I go into the control panel and security option, everything is enabled, so I don't know what the problem is.

Important info:

- System: 32 bit
- Processor: Intel(R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU T2390 @ 1.86 GHz 1.87 GHz
- Security System: Comodo Anti-Virus

I tried this already:
- Restarting Computer --> no effect
- Go to services to check if the Windows Update is starting up automatically (delayed) and if it's activated --> no effect
- Go to the security option in control panel to check if everything is acitvated --> everything activated, still getting the same message, computer shuts down randomly.

I'm very desperate, does anybody know what to do?

P.S. I got the message to check the security of my computer while I was writing this thread, and it shut down... just 10 minutes after the last shutdown...

Hello, you may want to do some hardware tests : Diagnostics I would start out doing a memory test , then I would do the hard drive diagnostic .

Thank you very much for both of your quick answers!

I was hoping to solve the problem without rebooting my computer. I will check out both of your solutions right now.

I threw in the Diagnostic link because of your other Thread you have going on, just a thought for you .

Shawn's solution didn't seem to help, I still can't find updates.

I threw in the Diagnostic link because of your other Thread you have going on, just a thought for you .

When I read the steps, it said somewhere to boot from a cd. I've got a CD with Hiren's Boot program, but booting won't help me now, because I'm not the only one using htis laptop.

The diagnostics require you to make a bootable dvd to use to run the diagnostic is what that is about, For example , to run a hard drive test, you would make the applicable dvd per instructions for the type of hard drive you have. If you are not concerned about your hardware working properly , then do not worry about running such test, but, in my opinion , you have so many issues , it would seem as if your RAM or Hard drive have issues preventing your software from working properly, Just a thought for you .
