so im trying to install service pack 2, but it says i need to install service pack 1 first. my system says i have service pack 1, even though i can not find it anywhere on my computer. when i try to install system pack 1 it says it already is installed.
any suggestions appreciated.

Your SP sounds like it is corrupted. I would make a system restore point in the event of a problem and then uninstall
How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step
I would then install again, at that point try to install SP2

if you mean uninstall the service pack i cant find either one on my updates list. i also now found out that updates KB2393802 & KB971029 have been installing about every day since 7/23/2011 without actually being installed.

It may be there as a pre release or possibly one of these situations
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 service packs are not available for installation through Windows Update
