Thanks for your advice but unfortunately I was unable to complete the task, I downloaded the 7-zip file and that's where things started to go wrong. It wasn't the same as the one in the screenshot....instead of a Compatibility tab my one had a Share tab. So I looked at how to change this and was taken into the registry, I followed the steps and the very last one again on mine wasn't the same as the screenshot so I backed out before I made matters worse!! The instructions were to make changes in the registry, something I know nothing about, especially when the (layers) file wasn't there. Sorry

Is there any other way to get the info you require?

    Kind regards
    Hello Bill,

I'm so so sorry! I had a typo in those last instructions. What I meant to say was choose step 1 only.

    Hi Bill,

Yes, that's the one! Good job. Before we move on to a fix, I would like to double check these files with the results from the SFC scan. Can you please go to this tutorial:

    System Files - SFC Command

Near the top of the page, you will see a yellow "Tip" box with two sets of instructions in it. Could you follow step 1 only please? This will generate a file, sfcdetails.txt, which I would like you to post the contents of for us to have a look at.

    Tom
    Sorry

    Tom

    Hi Richard

    Tried some of the options in that third suggestion of yours but sorry to say still no luck installing afterwards. Another update was added to the list but this one was successfully installed;

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.127.201.0)

Why can this one install but not the others?

I'm most grateful for your time, help and advice.

    Kind regards

    Bill

    Hi Tom

Followed the steps to the letter in option 1 but when I closed the elevated command prompt and checked my desktop there was no sfcdetails.txt file.

    Kind regards

Did you follow post number 4?

Defender installs differently than the others. Defender is your Anti Malware.

Post number 4....... what one was that? I looked at the link you sent with your last post but unsure what you'd like me to do.

    The relevant part is here:

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here

I'll take a step back here, it's getting confusing having two people helping simultaneously and you're in much better hands with Rich I'll stay subscribed to this thread and I'll post if I spot anything.

I've 12 important updates that I've tried installing but keeps failing and gives an error code 80070641.

I've tried the Fix-it tool in windows with no luck, also ran sfc /scannow which informs me that I have corrupt files that it could not fix.

I have also checked windows installer is set to automatic and is started.

    Any ideas folks???
TY Tom, but you are too generous. I helped obtain the SFC, to see if there were problems others could solve.
Without any other input from you or others, my next suggestion is a Repair install.

Okay, I'll give it a quick go replacing these files manually As confirmed by your CBS log, I think these are the culprit files:

taskkill.exe" of Microsoft-Windows-TaskKill, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing
2012-05-13 08:07:59, Info CSI 000004b7 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"tasklist.exe" of Microsoft-Windows-TaskList, Version = 6.0.6001.18000, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing

    System Look

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      taskkill.exe
      tasklist.exe
      taskmgr.exe
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
