    SP2 won't install

Everytime I try to install Service Pack 2 it tells me I need SP1 installed.
I downloaded service pack 1 and it tells me SP1 is already installed.
I'm not entirely what to do from here.

    1. Just to make sure whether you do have SP1 or not...
Start > right column, Computer > toolbar, System Properties > under Windows Edition heading, is Service Pack 1 listed ?

    If no......
    2. Did you use one of the following links for SP1 download ?
For 32-bit : Download: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

For 64-bit : Download: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone for x64-based Systems (KB936330) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

    Troubleshooting suggestions :

    1. Run a full virus scan. make sure your computer is clean.
Suggest you install a FREE version od Malwarebytes and run it.
It is the best in the busines.
Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer
    Select the free version.

    2. run a system file check to look for corrupt files. It will try to do repir if any found.
    System Files - SFC Command

    3. Dhttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.htmlo a disk check to look for bad sectors etc. It will try to do repair if any found.

If the diskcheck tutorial seems a bit confusing, here is my own version :
Start button > in the search box, type cmd > look to top left, right click at cmd.exe > click Run As Administrator > press Enter key.
You will now see a black and white screen. That is your cmd window.
At the flashing prompt, type this ....... chkdsk /f/r
It is best if you copy/paste that above command line to avoid typo. There is a space between "chkdsk" and "/".

    press Enter key.
The window will say something like...( I'm paraphrasing).... it can't do it now, but will do it at restart. Do you want to do so, y/n.
Type " y " as in yes > press Enter.

    Exit cmd window.
Restart your computer > the system will start doing disk check.
It will take quite some time.... a long time. Just sit back and wait. DON'T turn it off.
The system will restart when disk check is completed.

    good luck.

No luck, perhaps the best method might just be a clean install?

    Sorry to hear that.
Do you have a Vista Installation dvd ? If yes, you can do a Repair Install.
    Repair Install For Vista

It is quite involving. Please read the Information, Notes, Tips and Warnings sections thoroughly before you start.

If you do not have a Vista Installation DVD, then contact your computer manufacturer.
Ask for a set of Recovery disks. The cost of the set is very small and it is the best investment you ever had made.
Use the recovery disks to restore your Vista.
Make sure you back up your personal files if you intend to keep them.

    Good luck.
