Windows Update for Vista (64bit)

Hi,

I am trying to fix a problem I am having with Windows Update in Vista which I came across when searching for a printer driver towards the end of last year - it appears WU had not run since the 28/7/2012.

Not sure I understand what happened on the 28/7 but from this point forward the WindowsUpdate log file reported an error 80070424 every time & never started again.

Prior to the issue the WindowsUpdate logging process was reporting scvhost.eve & wuaueng.dll on initialisation startup , however, after this date it reported 2 consecutive but different process/modules - first newdev.exe & wudriver.dll followed by newdev.exe & wuapi.dll.

On reviewing my services it appears that the both Windows Update & BITS service are missing from my services list - I can only assume these existed before the problem arose.

Yesterday I noticed an MS forum suggesting that SP1 was no longer supported & could cause problems with WU so I downloaded Vista SP2 which appeared to run sucessfully.

Unfortunately this has not resolved the problem and the only change I can see is that no WU logfile updates are being written today.

Having reviewed a number of threads I have seen suggestions to run sfc / scannow, MS FixIT etc aswell as the removal of qmgr.dat files some directories all with mixed results.

I have held off on doing any of this as yet pending some further recommendations.

Appreciate any suggestions and an extract of the WU log file is available as required ?

Thanks.

Re: BITS Service error 80080005 on Vista (64 bit)

Sent earlier in error - sorry big fingers.........

I have been trying to resolve this issue for a few weeks now so would appreciate any help ?

Having reviewed previous threads on Windows Update errors I have now complete the following steps ;

1) Rolled back to Vista SP1 as SP2 did not resolve Windows Update issue

2) Run SFC /SCANNOW - CBS log reported clean apart from issue with tcpmon.ini which I read from other threads is non critical

3) Identified and created the missing BITS service (not started)

4) Checked the BITS dependant services (all identified as in place, set to manual and started)

5) Windows Update - Reset using "How to Reset & Re-register Windows Update in Windows 7 and Vista" (tutorial by Brink)

Command in batch file "Regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll" appears to be failing on my machine with the following error.

Error message - the module "qmgr.dll" was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Make sure that "qmgr.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file.

Windows Update at least now appears to find updates to download but once 'install updates' selected the program hangs & error 8008005 is still reported in the WindowsUpdate log.

I continued on as outlined.......

6) Confirmed folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader was empty - complete

7) Ran MS Fix 50202 in AGGRESSIVE MODE

8) Uninstalled all 3p security software, download accelerators and any program for managing and monitoring network connections that could be identified.

Unfortunately error 80080005 is still being reported.

From running BITSADMIN qmgr.dll & bitsidg.dll are different to rest of BITS components.

Is it time to run a some kind of repair option or can I get the necessary files any other way ? Really appreaciate any help.

I am assuming this is the reason for BITS service not starting properly with Error 2 - system cannot find the file

I only have an OEM Vista installation & drivers CDs that came from Dell with my laptop.

Based on start of the link provided I'm not sure if these will suffice but I will take a more detailed look tomorrow.

In the meantime any other ideas would be most welcome.

Hello alco01 and welcome to the forums

If you haven't already done a repair install, then I'm happy to have a go at fixing this for you.

Could you download and run (install) the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT):

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista for x64-based systems (KB947821) [November 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center

When it finishes, navigate to:

C:\Windows\Logs

And copy the CBS folder to your Desktop. Then zip this up and upload it here for analysis please.

Hi Tom,

I have previously identified that it is the BITS service that is causing the problem but I was unable to re-start.

I went throught the tutorial outlined to fix this & the only aspect I had not completed was the Method 3 (see previous threads) - the importing of a BITS.zip file to update the registry.

I will kick this off again from scratch & revert to you once I get to this stage again.

Question - would you expect the BITS registry to be the same on all Vista Ultimate x64 machines or is this PC dependant ?

Hi alco01,

Yes, as far as I know, it would be okay to use an export from another Vista Ultimate x64 computer. Do you have access to one? I could probably source one here if not.

It appears to me that there is a BITS.reg in the BITS.zip file that is included in the tutorial - I don't know if this is suitable for a Vista x64 Ultimate OS.

If I understand the BITS tutorial (Method III), I believe it is saying to download this file from the Bits.zip file and import the into the registry. I will of course back up my own BITS.reg before doing this but appreciate your input before I take this further ?

Hi alco01,

Sorry, I completely misunderstood your last post.

Yes there is one in that tutorial, which will be suitable for Vista Ultimate x64. I would recommend that you backup all of your registry:

RegBak

Please download RegBak (by AceLogix Software) from the link below and save it to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on regbak.zip then select Extract all... and extract the files to your Desktop

    For 32-bit (x86) editions of Windows, double-click on regbak.exe
    For 64-bit (x64) editions of Windows, double-click on regbak64.exe

If you are unsure whether you have x86 or x64 Windows, see here

  • Without changing any options, click Next. RegBak will now backup all of your registry hives.

After you have done so, then go ahead with the steps in Method 3 here:

Hi Tom,

I have imported the alternate BITS registry and on rebooting the service has started sucessfully. I have now completed a Windows update so things are looking good.

FYI - I compared the registry settings for BITS service - pre & post - and values appear to have changed considerably - obviously this service got corrupted somehow.

I still need to reinstall some of the software that I had removed and will be keeping an eye out for any system impacts as these are re-installed.

I don't anticipate any issues but will wait until this last step is concluded before I mark this thread to solved.

Many thanks for the time you have put in on this - I really appreciate your help.

Regards,
Alan.
