Solved Windows Update Says I'm Current - With IE7 and No Service Packs

I had to replace a bad hard drive on a Hewlett-Packard tower, and after installing Vista 32 using the disk I originally burnt when the computer was new, I started installing the updates. Lots of updates. But I finally reached a point where Windows Update told me that no more updates were available - that my computer was now up-to-date.

The only problem is that my computer is running IE7 with no service packs installed. I have restarted the PC several times since the last update and it continues to think I'm current.

I manually downloaded IE9, but I'm told it can't be installed because of my service pack. I tried to download Vista SP1 but IE7 kept shutting down on me. I manually downloaded IE8, but was told that IE8 was not able to run on my OS.

I had to use another computer to download Vista SP1 onto a flash drive, then install that service pack from the flash drive. Once SP1 was installed, nothing changed - no SP2 available, no IE9 available, and the stand-alone IE9 won't install because it's not supported by my service pack (now SP1)

Anybody know why Windows would think I was current when I obviously was not? And what about IE8 and IE9? And given what has transpired, how am I supposed to know when this PC really IS current?

Needless to say I've already read Why SP1 may not be available for you and how to get it. Nothing in it is applicable.

IE 9 is not for SP1 but only for SP2.
That answer really fails to address the overriding problems I had with Windows / Vista updates
  • If IE9 is only for SP2, then why couldn't I install IE8? Why did the system tell me IE8 could not run on my OS, when that OS was already running IE7 - an older browser?
  • Why did Windows tell me there were no updates available when I was running IE7 and SP0?
  • Why did I have to manually download SP1? This was a fresh install on a new, just formatted HDD
  • After I installed SP1 why did it still tell me I was current with no updates available?
  • Why did I have to manually download SP2 and then IE9 before automatic updates finally started to work again?

Windows requires certain updates to be installed before it will even offer a service pack. I believe that there is also a required update for Windows updater. Personally I prefer the download since it seems to be less problematic and comes with everything it needs. As for IE 8 you might have a problem with your system if it wasn't installing. Did you receive a specific error code? I suggest that you try an SFC scan.

Look, I don't want to be argumentative, but if I accept your rationale, that 'Windows requires certain updates to be installed before it will even offer a service pack',..... Well then shouldn't it have been offering those updates through Automatic Updates. Or better yet, requiring them? Instead of telling me that 'No updates are currently available'? I mean you can't have it both ways. If one accepts the idea that the system won't offer service packs until certain updates are installed, then offer me the needed updates.

It can be really hard to respond after reading something like that but I did suggest that you perform an SFC scan.

Ahhhh, let's just move on. I installed standalone SP1 followed by standalone SP2 followed by standalone IE9. The PC seems to functioning better than it has in years. SFC /scannow revealed no system integrity errors. The question is certainly not solved, but I'm ready to make it go away.
