Windows Update error code 8024A000; unable to install any update.

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.

Cheers and many thanks in advance,
Nommy

That's very reminiscent of similar errors in Win7 - and I wouldn't be surprised to see it being non-genuine.
Please post an MGADiag report BEFORE doing the below potential fixes.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Storage Matrix Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here -
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=17882

(IATA89ENU.exe)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

If nothing has changed, try this...

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If neither of them work, we'll re-evaluate.

Hey Noel,

In the beginning I also thought of a counterfeit installation, especially since my dad's computer guy was a bit shady when I asked him about his Microsoft partnershift, but I already ran an MGA on most of those, and all came out clean.

I haven't run an MGA on this machine yet, but I did activate Windows by phone less than three hours ago.
Here's the MGA;

Looks genuine on the first glance, but the hellish lot of file mismatches are making me doubt.
If anything, the original laptop before the HDD crashed had a valid, genuine license on it. After the HDD crashed and was replaced my dad's computer guy gave me a Vista install disk with it (which I asked for it, since the DigitalRiver Vista ISO's are down) with which I installed Vista on this laptop. I activated with the original key on the sticker at the bottom of the laptop. Windows then told me that it coudn't verify the activation (most likely because I hadn't installed the wireless drivers yet and had no internet connection) so I activated it by phone.

One note, the ACER Support website doesn't list this website so I had to download all drivers via third party websites. A few drivers looked like they were meant for other devices and so I removed/replaced them, but I can't say for 100% that all drivers are correct, some may be faulty. Could a faulty driver cause this?

Thanks mate :)

That list of file mismatches is exactly what I was expecting to see at this point.
The reason that it's not showing as non-genuine is that there's no WAT update for Vista ;)

Have you tried validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate yet?
That may kick it into a non-genuine status.

Aah, I didn't know that Vista didn't have WAT. You learn something every day :)

I didn't use online activation yet, let's see what happens.
Mhm, expected it to unvalidate, but instead it validated smoothly, heh.
Here's a screenshot from the website, it's in Dutch, but roughly translated it says "Welcome to Microsoft! The version of Windows installed on this machine is valid."

Time to reinstall the Intel storage drivers?

Oh, I just noticed, every time I go to Windows Update the window freezes. Only way for me to remove it is to restart explorer.exe

That'd figure - I suspect that the whole Crypto system is borked.

Try the Intel drivers, and we'll see what happens.

You could try installing SP1 and SP2 - that may kick the system into submission.

Hey Noel, sorry for taking so long, but I just got home from GamesCom in Koln, Germany :)

Try the Intel drivers, and we'll see what happens.
Just did this. Now the WU window no longer makes explorer.exe crash, but it still gives the same error.

You could try installing SP1 and SP2 - that may kick the system into submission.
I would if I could mate, but everything WU related doesn't install. I tried WU, MSE and SURT.

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVC
Trying this now, will report if it works. Should I post an MGA afterwards or run another SCF?

Thanks for helping,

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database
Hmm, not sure what was supposed to happen, but it took less than a minute to complete all commands.. I then restarted the machine and if I look in /System32/, I see both a CATROOT2 and a CATROOT2OLD folder, so I guess it did what it was supposed to do?

Anyhow, WU still doesn't work and gives me the same error :(

Hi Noel,

I have been caught out by these Intel Drivers more than once.

Thanks for the reminder.
