Updates were not configured correctly

When I came back to my computer after installing 10 updates this evening and then restarting, I had a screen stating: Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not restart your computer.

As you can see by the screenshot below, there were only two updates that didn't fail.

I Googled and researched a little. I ran the Microsoft FixIt for Windows Update and it reported as shown here:

I downloaded a couple of the updates that failed, thinking to try a manual run and see what happened. When I clicked on the file it showed "Searching for updates ..." and just kept running that with nothing ever happening.

I decided to do a System Restore. After that was complete I ran sfc /scannow and it reports that no integrity errors were found.

After the System Restore was complete the Task Bar again showed that I have 8 updates to install. (10 minus the 2 that were successful the first time.) I am going to start installing these 8, doing just one at a time, and see what happens. I wanted to document this all while it's fresh in my mind. If this doesn't work I will come back and beg for some help. Hopefully I'll be able to come back and report that the updates installed.

Even tho no one has answered this, I will post and finish it off in the case that it might help someone else. After my System Restore I went ahead and re-installed the updates, 1 and 2 at a time, and everything installed successfully.

Hi Nikilet:

I had the same "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" message when I ran the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates on my 32-bit Vista machine today (09-Dec-2015). Windows Update found a total of 15 available updates for my machine (13 Important, 1 Recommended - I declined 1 Optional update for Silverlight) and 7 updates for Vista and IE were rolled back and marked as Failed.

Just FYI, many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking. This month's Windows Update took a full hour on my machine before it finally finished checking and presented a list of available updates. The screenshot below shows my CPU stuck at 50% (i.e., complete saturation of one of my dual cores) by the wuauserv service running under svchost.exe until the 40 min mark, and two re-boots (dark grey bands) around the 15 and 5 min marks.

Thanks for letting me know you were eventually able to get your updates to install successfully. I'll try another manual Windows Update tomorrow and post back if I run into any further problems.

After reading this, I decided not to attempt installing all updates at once, since I have exactly the same Vista version as the previous posters. I waited until yesterday in the hope that most Windows 10 users had already updated by then, and deselected everthing except Update for Windows Vista and the four Security Updates for Windows Vista. Those were successfully installed. Then I installed all the other updates, which were also successful. So dividing the updates into two parts is sufficient in some cases.
