Solved Remove IE9

When I installed IE9 a few error messages appeared but it seemed to install ok. I have now noticed a few problems when I run the software that are too big to be a beta issue. How do i uninstall the browser in order to get it again

Internet Explorer is an Update in Windows and to Uninstall click Start>Control Panel and then Click Uninstall Programs and Features once you get the Window Open in the Left hand pane click on Uninstall windows Updates And then Click On Internet Explorer 9 and Uninstall it after you restart your Computer you should have IE8 Unless you have uninstaled that

EDIT: Also There have been Many Problems with IE9 Beta in Vista and many complaints have been sent to Microsoft I would wait a Couple of weeks before Reinstalling it so Microsoft can Eliminate the Bugs

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Do you know when this problem began (when you installed IE9)? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

This isn't the recommended method (what was already suggested is that and I confirmed that with Microsoft http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/...do-i-install-or-uninstall-internet-explorer-9), but it if doesn't exist there to be uninstalled then this may be the best next alternative.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. I suggest waiting a bit before trying to re-install it - and I don't mean a couple of days but perhaps a few weeks. There seem to be some issues with it and Vista (I've seen several threads here about it and responses from some very, very good people who are having troubles which suggests it isn't a matter of doing it incorrectly or some type of incorrect setup but quite possibly a bug in the program causing some form of incompatibiiity which may affect much more than just the browser and your internet access - and IMHO isn't worth the risk) and it might be best to give Microsoft some time to work out those problems before installing or using this product on anything but 32-bit Windows 7. Of course, that's assuming the above is able to successfully remove it and return your system to IE8 (I assume) and that it will work fine and the other issues (whatever they are/were) will go away as well. If not, post back and I'll research further with some IE experts I know on another forum and see if they've seen this yet (I'm sure they have) and what solutions they've discovered.

P.P.S. We may also try using Revo http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/revo-uninstaller/revouninstaller.html to do the uninstallation instead of using Vista’s uninstall function. This often works when Vista doesn’t (and even does a better job) - but to be honest, I've never tried it with an update - only with an installed program so I don't know if it will even see IE9 to try to uninstall it and I don't know if doing so will mess up your return to the prior version or essentially uninstall all the IE versions - or remove enough so they don't work (which means before you attempt this if it comes to that, you should have IE8 already downloaded and ready to be installed (and/or install Firefox as a backup) in case things don't go quite as planned). But hold off on this option until I get back to you about other alternatives if System Restore doesn't do the job as I think and hope it should (and let us know what happens so we know whether or not to pursue our research into the problem).

Actually, IE9 Beta is supposed to be able to be uninstalled according to Microsoft: How do I install or uninstall Internet Explorer 9?. It just doesn't seem to be showing up where it should so the procedure can't be done. I'm hoping System Restore does the trick because though it's not the approved method to uninstall updates (even if it is accepted when the approved method doesn't work), it still should work.

Since I am not going to fool around using the beta, I am just guessing My guess is that it can be turned off, its worth a try, since it is free. If it cannot, SR would be the way to go. Since it is Beta, no one really knows how it will work.

The question is, did installing IE9 Beta disable or somehow inactivate IE8 so that even if IE9 can be turned off, will there still be an IE browser that can be used? I don't know (I guess it can't hurt to try - if it does, it can always be turned back on again and we're back where we were with SR as the best next choice) as I too have no intention of going anywhere near it (and if that wasn't already the case, it sure as the devil is now). I also wonder if, as a Beta product, simply turning it off even if that's possible will resolve any and all issues that might occur simply because of the installation and its continued presence on the system. Frankly, if it were my system given what I've heard here and elsewhere, I'd want it completely removed.

You can uninstall IE9 from "Installed Updates", once it's uninstalled IE8 becomes available as it's already in the "Installed Updates" further down the list. IE8 becomes unusable when we install IE9(similar to IE7 when IE8 installed in Vista).

But that's the problem, Brummy. Even though I see it clearly in your Installed updates list, the reply when presented with that procedure the first time was "It doesn't seem to be in that list, IE8 wasnt last time either when I wanted to get back to IE7." So for whatever reason, it's not there to uninstall which is why we've been discussing alternative methods to remove it.

Huh??? I have been running it since it came out on the 15th without any problems at all. However, I would suggest that, unless you really and truly know your computer, you should never try beta releases. As for me, I have been a beta tester for years and years for Microsoft and Mozilla programs and consider myself lucky to have the chance to use all the new things before release.

There have been loads of issues (including on my computer) Beta testing is good fun, but I have been done in a few times with a few pre-alpha dodgy wares on SourceForge that I was helping the developer with!

How do you remove the Bing search bar in IE8 on the top right? Its a pain.

I assume you're talking about the search box to the right of the address bar at the top right of IE8 (that happens at the moment to have Bing set as the default) and not some special Bing toolbar add-on that you've installed. If it is a Bing toolbar of some kind and not the search box you are talking about, forget what follows and post back so we can discuss exactly what it is that you have that needs to be removed.

If it is the search box itself you want to remove (whether Bing or any other search engine), perhaps the following article will assist you (though I believe option 1 is only available with certain versions of Vista that have gpedit.exe available and if your specs are up to date you don't have it - so you may need to edit the registry or use the reg file in option two - I'd do it manually as that way you know for sure what has been done and how to change it back if you ever want to do so but the reg files will probably do it just as well if you prefer): How to Disable, Remove or Hide IE8 Search Box » My Digital Life. Read the entire article about how this works so you understand precisely what you are doing and how it will affect IE - it seems it may be a little more than just removing that box but it should accomplish that. If you dislike what it did (or change your mind), then just change it back and it should return to the way it was.

Although the change in the registry will occur immediately, I'm not sure if the change will affect open IE windows, so close them and then open a new one and then you should see the results of the modification.

As with any time you are about to modify the registry, please first (before you start) create a system restore point and also backup the registry just to be on the safe side. That way you have a good chance of recovering if things don't go quite as expected.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I assume you're talking about the search box to the right of the address bar at the top right of IE8 (that happens at the moment to have Bing set as the default) and not some special Bing toolbar add-on that you've installed.
Yes sorry the Bing search bar. I haven't installed it its always been there on IE7 and IE8. I think it had Google and Yahoo listed but you can remove those but it always leave Bing behind. As that link says you can't remove it easily.

I have my own Yahoo toolbar which I can add favourite sites and Google is my default home page, plus I have AltaVista, Ask Jeeves, Dogpile Search, Excite UK, Froogle, HotBot Web Search, KillerInfo, Lycos, Mamma and Yauba in a seperate search sub folder.

Cheers Lorien. ;)
