Error code 800A01AD when installing Microsoft Cleanup Utility

When attempting to install the Microsoft Cleanup Utiliy (msicuu2.exe), the following "Windows Script Host" message box is displayed:

Script:
C:\Users\<my User folder>\AppData\Local\Temp\IXP000.TMP\StartMsi.vbs
Line: 1
Char: 1
Error: ActiveX component can't create object:
'Scripting.FileSystemObject'
Code: 800A01AD
Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error

My OS is Vista 64-bit service pack 2.

I ran 'regsvr32 scrrun.dll' succesfully and it didn't fix the problem.

I am also unable to install an HP printer software package due to a Windows Installer error. I have a feeling the two are related. I can't find a compatible Windows Installer to download which might fix the problem.

I have had this problem for some time.

Anyone have a clue?

Hello,

There are two common solutions to this problem (other than the ones you have already tried)

regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\wshom.ocx from Command Prompt, you did the last one correctly, so I assume you can do this again.

The next solution is the easiest. When you run msicuu2.exe, right click on it and click on Run as Administrator. Click OK at the UAC prompt if necessary. Do this even if you are the only computer administrator.

Good luck!

Richard

P.S. What are you trying to solve using this tool? Maybe we can help you with that as well?

Thanks for the quick response!

I did as yous suggested:

The run 'regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\wshom.ocxsucc' succeeded.

The attempted run (as Administrator) of msicuu2.exe failed again exactlty as described before.

This one is quite perplexing...

Hello,

Sorry for my late reply. Having some forum problems at this end trying to work out what has been replied to. Anyway,

From Command Prompt: wscript -regserver

I am still very confused. This error should be a permissions error when it tries to copy the temporary data to the Program Files folder, and is blocked by UAC. Therefore, Run as Administrator should fix the problem. Since it has not, try this solution to bypass the copy to Program Files (I think). Ignore the bit about when to run this fix (Windows Installer issues), just try the solution. Thanks much! I was able to run the Cleanup Utility!

However, the nagging question remains...

Why do I get the error when attempting to run normally?

As I mentioned previously, I believe the issue is preventing me from installing an HP printer software package which is my ultimate goal. Maybe my Windows Installer is corrupted.

Which leads me back to my search for a Windows Installer I can download that is compatible with Vista Ultimate 64-bit Service pack 2. I found one for Service pack 1, but it is rejected as not compatible.

Thanks again for the help!
