Solved BSOD : Frequent and random stop messages

I have an Acer Travelmate 5720G, Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Recently, I started to experience random and quite frequent BSOD. After a couple of weeks of trying to fix it, I decided to do a fresh recovery with the recovery disks that I made when I first got the laptop.

After that, I installed Vista SP1 downloaded from Microsoft and then Vista SP2.

Throughout the process, I did get some BSODs as well, but in the end, everything installed fine.

I updated Vista to the latests updates along with some new drivers from the Acer website.

The BSODs seem to be less frequent, but still happening.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 installed and it did not find any malware or virus. I also checked with Malwarebytes.

Every now and then Kaspersky would crash and then restart itself.

I did notice at one point watching some flash video online consistently crashed my machine. I have since uninstalled Flash, but the BSODs still occur.

Attached, please find the minidumps and other relevant info as asked by J. C. Griffith. (hopefully I have done it correctly)

I also ran memtest and it did not show any issues with RAM (1 day of running). Did chkdsk and sfc /scannow ... both ok.

Help anyone ?

Thanks again ...

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
Arguments:
Arg1: 00000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT
Arg2: 80154000
Arg3: 00000000
Arg4: 00000000

The first steps to try and resolve the problem

Take a memtest. I know you did already, but unless using memtest86 and done exactly the way shown, take it again.

Update the outdated drivers. Especailly older than 07 and the last two that are listed.
If that does not show any results take a driver verifier

Follow the listed instructions.
The reports that you have submitted reveal clues to the cause of your problem. They do not give a definitive answer. The more reports that we receive the more clues are made available improving our chances of finding a solution to your problem. You may have to experience several more BSODs until the final answer is discovered.

If overclocking restore normal settings

Update outdated listed drivers. If I have inadvertently listed any Microsoft Drivers, they can be ignored. If the list is extensive I have included the driver verifier test so that you may determine which drivers are in need of immediate attention.

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html
and here
http://www.edbott.com/weblog/the-vista-master-driver-list/
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper
www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
You can also locate information about your driver using this information
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96442-device-manager-finding-unknown-devices.html

Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html
Run for 8 passes
If passes try a good stick in each slot for 3 passes
If fails do the same for 8 passes.

Uninstall your current Anti Virus and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials.
www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Run the upgrade advisor to help discover hardware problems
www.microsoft.com/Windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

After performing all of the above, post back with any new BSOD reports, or indicate that the attempted repairs were successful.
If any links do not work, if clicked, please copy and paste to browser address bar.
It is very important to remember that the dump reports only give clues as to the problem and although it is very easy to analyze only one or two, usually more are needed. If you experience additional BSOD after installing a current version of the driver in question, be sure to post so that we can use the additional information to assist you in preventing the BSOD's

Driver Verifier Inst
Since the driver that crashed you has not been listed you should run driver verifier
Please run Verifier with these settings:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.
So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).
Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like. From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.
Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).
Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.
If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Hi richc46, I will give it a go ... I did run memtest86 ... though I can't remember how long it ran Also, initially I had Microsoft Security essentials ... the BSODs were still happening. I thought might be a virus/malware, hence I installed KIS, but after several scans (BSODs during some scans) ... nothing. I will keep you posted ... thanks.

I took out one of the 1G RAM sticks just to check system stability and so far no BSOD, even when running several apps (usually during a Kaspersky scan). Usually, it will BSOD by now (though I can't be sure).

I will run memtest86 once the kaspersky scan has finished (or past 50%).

Actually, I will swap the RAM I took out and run memtest86 (v3.5a). I am beginning to think my initial run was not extensive enough.

Just rememeber one thing, dont rush any test. For the sake of argument, if it is a memory problem and we do not uncover it now, we will spend a lot of time and possibly not find the problem in the near future.

I am now running an extensive test on the RAMs

Here are the details :-
RAM1 on slot1 (this was the RAM I removed this morning)
RAM2 removed, slot2 empty

Memtest86 v3.5a
Single CPU mode (I think ... whichever is the default one)
Attached is a screenshot.
Do let me know if there is something I should change

So far you are doing fine.

I just had a look and saw this error screen shot. Is this a real error or something else ?

btw, the keyboard is totally locked out ... the "Errors per Memory Slot" number just keeps incrementing ...

I am going to do a hard reset and re-run memtest86 again ...

An error that appears anywhere is something that has to be investigated.

I stopped memtest86 and rebooted vista. So far, it has not bsod yet. Strange ...

Could it be due to a motherboard problem accessing/using both RAM modules together rather than just a bad RAM/slot ?

If so, how can I diagnose that ?

I'll rerun memtest86 later tonight ...

Thanks for all the suggestions ...

We have to use the tests in the way that I know. I have a bundle of tests that I can give. But lets finish the memory test, first.
If memory is involved the only errors that I have seen are the sticks themselves or the slots.
I have found that following the memtest instructions have revealed all memory problems, just dont rush it

Hi richc46 and anyone else who can help,

I left memtest86 running overnight with 2 sticks of RAM on both slots. No failures, 16 passes.
I will try running 1 stick on 1 slot and do it for each slot tonight.

In the meantime, I am using just 1 RAM stick ... it seems quite stable. When I put both sticks in earlier, it started to crash quite quickly. I will attempt to get the latest ATI drivers for my graphics card.

That should sort out
atikmdag.sys Fri Jul 27 23:36:35 2007

As for the following driver ...
NETw4v32.sys Wed Aug 08 11:26:03 2007
can someone help ? It looks like my wifi driver, but I did download and install the latest one from the intel site. In my device manager, my wifi card is using the following driver
NETwLv32.sys

Thanks again for your help

It seems to be tied into memory. Works only with one stick but not more. Test each stick.\\
Dont understand the driver question. You say that you did it already.

I just installed the latest ATI driver. It appears that the driver is the latest one, only the catylyst software has changed.

As for the wifi driver, I cannot seem to get a newer version of NETw4v32.sys
My guess is that it has been superceded by NETwLv32.sys as that was what I downloaded from the intel site and that is the file that is being used when I checked my device manager.

Hi richc46,

I ran memtest86+ on both RAM sticks on both slots and it passed >10 times everytime.

So, I think the RAM and slots are ok ... which now leads me to think that is the use of both RAMs at the same time that causes the BSOD.

I ran Furmark to stress my ATI card and no crashes when 1 RAM stick is used.

I am going to remove kaspersky and install MSE next ... then run win7 upgrade check.

Any other suggestions welcomed.

Thanks.

After you complete the tests and we have all the results, we will decide where to proceed.
If you pass all test, it would be my contention that both sticks are not identical. You cannot mix and match. If you wanted to replace one, now; I would say replace both

Another possiblity is to change the slots used.

or as already suggested could be a bad motherboard.

Hi richc46

The RAM modules are identical ... they were the same ones that came with the notebook, I have not changed them. They are both Samsung 1GB sticks.

I tested both RAM sticks (one at a time) on both slots and they pass (>10 times). I also tested both sticks together and they pass (>10 times).

This leads me to believe that some s/w or driver is not happy with 2 sticks used at the same time.

FYI, I have been using my notebook all day with only 1 RAM stick and it has been solid all day. Antivirus scan, web browsing, GPU stress test, flash video ... all ok.

Windows 7 upgrade assistant noticed some incompatible s/w ... NTI Backup Now! 4.7 and a whole host of Acer s/w
I will try to uninstall these ones first ...

no luck ... after uninstalling a whole host of s/w, the darn notebook still crashes. This time it blamed my touchpad driver.

btw, the 2 RAM sticks work fine in safe mode. no bsod's yet.

Surely someone must know something ?

What else can I try ?
