Yes it can~! I've already installed Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on my Inspiron 1420 which runs normally without any complications. The Drivers? Its already detected and installed after i entered the windows.Of course the most important drivers like the display, sound and so on u have to find it to complete it. I know its weird but i am glad that I successfully installed it. The only problem is about my NVidia Geforce 8400m gs graphics memory problem. Before, i've got 256 mb of graphics memory on windows xp but now on my vista, its only got 128 mb of graphics memory. Plus i cant play most games that requires 256 mb graphics memory games. I cant change it in BIOS either after updating it...

Overall, I say it's 50-50 chance to get the drivers detected automatically. My windows running smoothly without complications and works as it supposed to. For gamers like me, I am still unsatisfied with my recent problem...need help~!:confused::confused:

I thought Dell didn't have any Vista x64 drivers (no 64 bit section) for my Vostro 1700 but it turns out every Vista driver included the 64 bit and if I remember correctly when I selected a 32 bit driver the resulting page said the download was for both 32 bit and 64 bit OSes.

Another thing, If you go through the dell's website and there's no vista x64 driver, don't worry. just go on and look at the drivers then click the 'applies to '. There, there's an information that says for vista x64. Weird isn't it? I am also quite surprised there are drivers for vista x64. But so far, they didn't provide all drivers like NVidia Geforce 8400m gs. If u really want the driver, you have to force install the graphic driver. In this case, I use Acer's Graphic Driver which have the same graphic for vista x64... "Right now, I am using my vista ultimate x64's media center. It's SUPER COOL~! ;)&

If that doesn't help, You first install the vista x64 then go to automatic update and search for update. I've also got the 3 drivers for the 'base system device'. It's also installed automatically after update... I hope that my information helps~! XD

I have the same laptop, and I was able to find the Vista x64 just fine with all the drivers, but the Dell wireless card which has the 32& 64bit driver but the system keep stating that it has an issue with the hardware driver and it stop it..
Also I have three Base System Devices that I'm sure what they are or even how to update them... any idea.

Might have Home Premium 64x on it (4GB DDR2). If thats the case, then you should do an upgrade install to Ultimate 64x without losing any drivers.
