nvidia geforce 7900 GT/GTO vista x64 problem

I recently upgraded from the 32 bit version of Vista Home Premium to the 64 bit version. When I had the 32 bit version, I had some trouble finding the appropriate driver for my Geforce 7900 gt/gto graphics card. After some time I was getting the error code-12 insisting that I get rid of other devices to make this card work properly due to a lack of resources. I don't know what that means except that it read too many drivers and I installed them one at a time till it worked. Great, it worked.

I then upgraded to the 64bit that my computer was originally for and all the drivers were good to go except once again, the graphics card. I went onto Nvidia's website and downloaded the current 64bit driver for the Geforce 7900 gt/gto which was the 181.20 version of the driver and it didn't work. So, because of this it only reads this card as a standard vga. I'm not a big fan of that. I tried the Windows Update to install their version of the driver and that didn't work either.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help better my situation?

Thanks,
Stan

first of all, download a zip file of your drivers, which contains many files.
u need to mannally install the driver in device management, specify the driver path where the inf file in.and choose the model,e.g. geforce 7900 gt.

hondavtec93, can you give us a run down of how you are trying to install the drivers? it may be a simple mistake and instead of starting from scratch, we can simplify the outcome of it.

Did you get the 181.20 from here?... GeForce Release 181

Thanks for getting back.

I'm going to assume so far, it's a simple mistake on my part. I did install the 181.20 from the link you displayed a couple days ago when I put the x64 on. When I installed the driver, I went to the device manager and selected "upgrade driver software." Then I did two things here. The first time, I went to show me the list of avail. drivers and selected the 181.20. The second time I uninstalled everything, and installed the 181.20 again, so it would just be that driver and the VGA driver on the list of avail. drivers. I then went back after seeing that and installed it through the file path c:/Nvidia blah blah blah. It installed, restarted, and still has the damn question mark next to the Graphics card. Still says code 12 not enough resources, remove something else, you know. So this is where I'm at. Essentially it's still reading my card as a VGA, and if I'm doing something wrong, well then I suck. Where shall I go from here?

Do you have the Nvidia Control Panel installed as well? if so, is it version 6.03 (the latest one). If you do and you have an older version, I would suggest uninstalling it first, get the new version and install it before you install the drivers (this is based on another issue I am having with NVCP).

Ok, before you do anything, get yourself a copy of CCleaner or another good Registry Cleaner. Download it to a Temp folder or any other folder you can later find, run the installation and make sure you have an icon on the desktop or a way to find the app.

I was having issues with my drivers, the culprit turned out to be my monitor not having the proper x64 drivers installed but, this is how I installed my drivers from now on and I have had no problems whatsoever.

I unistall my current driver from Device Manager, I inmediately see the screen changing to regular vga drivers, it asks me to reinstall, I DO NOT do so, I know go to the Control Panel and uninstall the PhysX drivers as well (this is part of the 170/180 Nvidia series drivers), I Reboot now and Vista installs the std vga drivers, I then use CCcleaner to get rid of any instances or drivers remmants on my registry (when you open it, you'll see the registry icon, choose it and Run it. I reboot again for good measure.

Once I am back at the desktop, I go to the folder where I downloaded the drivers, uncompress the file directly to the same folder I saved it to, I again go to my device manager, go to my display adapters, double click on vga card and then, double click on driver tab and click on update drivers.

Once there, I tell it to let me choose the driver, click on "Have Disk", search for the folder where I uncompressed the executable and click on the .inf file, it starts doing the whole installatation process and tells me to reboot once its done.

I am sure there are other ways to do this faster but, so far, this has work for me in Vista x64... I wouldn't think it wouldn't hurt anything trying it this way.

If this fails, we will use the other method.

I have the new 6.03 version. I already had CCleaner, so good start.

I did what you recommended before, minus the CCleaner part. Sooo, I did what you suggested step for step, and I still have the problem. Code 12 - not enough resources. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

This has been the issue the entire time. ugh. Well, anything else you recommend?

The funny thing is, when i scan for updates on the Nvidia Control Panel, it still brings up the driver. I assumed it would go away, but it does not. Also it brings up an update for my motherboard version 15.01. I have Geforce AMD 64bit processor from Gigabyte. Yea the computer I built 5 years ago, but everything is updated driver wise except the graphics card. the motherboard update I took off as well. Everything worked properly except the RAID controller update driver. So I just took it all off. Now I just have the 181.20 driver update for the 7900 gt/gto and the control panel. Thats it....

OK, let back up a minute, can you tell me what does Vista lists under "Display Adapters" on your Device Manager?

This may take a little while longer but I feel something is weird or I am not understanding your dilemma correctly.

Under the Device Manager and Display Adapters, it says NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO.

Next to it is the awesome yellow yield sign, saying hey I don't feel like working.

Under Device Status in the Properties Menu it says:

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Under Update Driver Software, and show list of avail. drivers on Computer, I have the 181.20 driver and the VGA Display Adapter listed to choose from thats it.

OK, inside the Device Manager window, click on... View>Resources by connection and check to see if the IRQ used by your video card is used by any other device, if so, this may be your culprit and if you feel up to it, you can uninstall it or remove it, reboot and then let Vista try to install it again with, hopefully, a different IRQ.

If you don't feel comfortable, just come back and post what you find and we'll go from there.

I am running out of options or tips though, pretty much, I was hoping that someone else (read: with more experience) would come in and lend a hand.

well there is not memory conflicts, even though it says there's a resource conflict and the driver is new, soooo i'm gonna put the 32 bit version back on probably and be done with it. at least the card will work then.

Just to let you guys know, I found the fix for my issue after weeks of messing around with it. I got it to work on my 32 bit version. I haven't loaded the 64 bit back on, but it will probably work the same. The code 12 error is gone. Thanks for all who helped.

Essentially there was a bcedit code I entered, then loaded optimized defaults in the BIOS and bam, victory.

Just for future reference about IRQs, modern computers use APICs (Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controllers) instead of IRQs. They work the same way, but an APIC can have 255 different device IRQ lines on a single APIC, and as a typical computer only has 24 lines, an IRQ conflict rarely happens. :geek:

True, in my situation Nvidia has the worst support ever. One graphics card threw off everything I do. Only for me to do something random and it work.
