Age of Empires 2 (can't enter game)

Hello,

I recently dug AOE2 off my shelf and decided to play it on my Vista laptop (Ultimate, x64). I can get into the main menu fine, and set up my game, but when it comes to loading the actual gameplay, the map, that is, the game simply crashes to desktop.

In classic Vista fashion, i get the message: "Age of Empires 2 has stopped working: A problem has caused the program to stop working. Windows will notify you if a solution becomes available." Seriously.

Has anyone else experienced this? Heard a solution, perhaps? I've found all sorts of forums but none on precisely this.

Appreciate any help, thanks.

I had a similar problem, but mine worked fine on my Vista32 for over a week, then it crashed. It gives me the same lame answer everytime I try to open, it adjusts the colors/graphics then crashes. Until now noone has responded to my post either. I did see where someone said to delete (after saving them someplace safe) your video drivers, then restart and run with essentially no graphic support and he said his worked, he just had to delete & reinstall the drivers everytime he played AOE2. I tried a different route and installed Virtual PC, it worked, but the VPC screen resized every time AOE2 started and it was way too small (4"x6"). The guys at the VPC forum said it isn't the right way to go about it, to try multibooting...

Have you tried runningthe game in XP compatibility mode? What I have also discovered helps, is to install the game to some folder other than the default "C:\Program Files". Installing to an unprotect folder, such as "C:\Games" usuallyu works for me. That how I got Diablo 1 working on Vista x64...

Yeah, originally I didn't adjust it at all and my graphics were awful - I had weird colors in the water, etc., etc. Then I adjusted the compatibility to reduce the colors, etc. I've tried running as XP, administrator, 98, etc. When I click to start my desktop adjusts like it is preparing to run in compatibility then the screen "program has stopped working" pops up. I can run the disk, reinstall, uninstall, etc. but the game just stopped working.

I'll try installing to another folder, it sure can't hurt! I noticed the day it stopped working there were updates (virus definitions) to Microsoft Forefront (AV) but I can't remove them (they are marked cannot remove) to test if they were the culprit...

I'll try your fix,

Thanks!
