Games not working - Unload Debugger error

Hi

Have a Packard Bell iExtreme running Vista Home Premium 64 bit, a quad core Intel, nVidia GT 220, 4Mb Ram.

I have loaded and run successfully SOME of my old games - eg Age of Empires, Links 2003, Flight Sim X but some games, once installed, give me an error message when I try to run them. The error message ... 'Unload Debugger and try again'

All games are installed with Administrator rights, and I have tried setting compatability settings to both XP and '98 for each of the games listed as problems.

I have not loaded a Debugger (knowingly anyway). Problem programs include FarCry (tho FarCry2 works fine - sadly what a rubbish game), TOCA Race Driver 2 (tho Race Driver Grid works fine), Doom 3 and Halo. I have given up wasting time installing others until I can sort out the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jeff

Hi Richard

Thx for the prompt reply. I have seen the fixes you referenced, I don't have the Amdfix file on my machine (I have done an advanced search selecting all locations and the non-indexed/hidden/system file option.)

I have the latest drivers for my sound card and have tried the clean boot startup all to no avail.

Any further help would be much appreciated - I really don't want to abandon some of my old and much loved games.

Thx Patonb

I haven't tried installing an earlier dx version, I have v10. I am assuming that installing 9 won't overwrite anything to do with my current version, or do I have to reinstall 10 after playing a game each time?

No, it installs alongside. You SHOULD install DirectX9.0c, and don't worry about 10.1/11, that will remain. :)

Thx again Richard

Doom 3 runs fine now after installing DirectX9 - FarCry however is now offering a different error - error 1603 which after looking up I understand to be a Windows Installer error pointing at a corrupt registry? I have run a reg checker and had no reported problems, and all my other software seems to be running well. I will try a couple of other games that were offering the Debugger error and see if they work after installing the relevant DirectX.

Thanks again for the help :)

Could you please write down the entire message for me? It doesn't actually have to be a Windows Installer error, that is just the most common cause.

Without going into depth, errors are stored in hexadecimal. Take error 0x80070490. Convert hex 0490 to decimal (comes out at 1168) The 8007 means that it is a System Error code. We now have a system error code 1168. If we had 0x800f0490, we would have a CBS error code 1168, which is completely differnt.

My point is that we need to know the whole error code, as your error code does not actually need to originate from Windows Explorer.

And this is why we are here to guide and teach you!

Thanks!

Richard

Far Cry goes thru the initial install - and then the installation bar rapidly moves about three quarters of the way to 100% and then an error window flashes up;

Feature transfer error

Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation.

Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information

there is an OK button in the bottom right of this window.

BTW - all the programs (except FarCry) now load and run fine - thx for making that happen :))

Hmmm ... booted up this morning (Weds) and found the Unload Debugger message again when I tried to run Age of Mythology (it was working ok yesterday - before I switched off for the night).

Doom 3 (though playing well in 1600x1200 and 16x anti-aliasing yesterday) is stuck in 640x800 screen res and no anti-aliasing. When I change it in the options panel I get the message 'your changes will be applied next time you run Doom 3' - but when I save and exit and then reload the settings are back to 640x800.

Do I need to re-install DirectX 9 EVERY time I want to play?
Is there a way of directing the older games to the DX9 installation?

Seems I'm absorbing a lot of your time just so I can play old games. Apologies for that.

Don't worry about it! Our replies were really snappy (less than 2 minutes) At about 2 replies each, that is less than 10 minutes between us. We have some truly amazing members here. We even have one who will spend up to 3 hours research an issues to provide the best possible answer, just for one post, not one thread.

You don't seem to be having much luck! You did everything correctly! And, after all that, it was a Windows Installer issues! My fault!

Do you know how DirectX works? It is just a load of shared files and code things. When you install DirectX 9.0c, it just puts a load of files into a folder. Every different version just uses a different folder. This is why they do not conflict. When the game runs, it just asks for the correct folder, and gets re-directed there. You cannot re-direct games to 9.0c, because they are already re-directed there.

And you certainly should only have to install DX9 once. I shall just post this before I lose it, and then add to it in a few minutes.

Turns out that DOOM not sticking (settings wise is a common issue: Doom 3 not remembering settings - Google Search) Try the latest patch: DOOM 3 Patch v1.3.1 Download, Doom 3 Patches

Install that, and see if it helps. Also, go into settings, and put the resolution up, but NOT the anti-aliasing.

Can you also please try to install DirectX9 again from here: Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

The thing I am particularly interested in is whether it updates any files, or says up to date. If if downloads and updates anything, please keep running it a few more times, to see if it is possible to get it to a stage where it thinks it is up to date.

I have not forgotten about your installation issue. One issues at a time, if you will :)

Thanks!

Richard

Hi Richard,

I downloaded and ran the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer - it installed several files. I ran it again and it said all files were up to date. So it DID update :D

Haven't had much time to play today so I will try reinstalling AoM, Doom 3 and FarCry and patch them and see what happens.

Again much appreciate your time and efforts :D

Jeff
