Help solve very slow folder browsing

Hi All,

I am trying to trace and fix a problem with very slow folder browsing on Vista ( both 32-bit and 64-bit ). My application uses SHBrowseForFolder to display a standard folder browse dialog. My browsing is plenty fast enough unless I browse to a folder with one or more subfolders containing lots of files.

For a concrete example, consider the following path ( D:\Images\Source1\Files ). D:\Images\Source1 has an Info subfolder that contains < 10 text files and a Files subfolder that contains 50,000 image files. In my application, selecting the D: drive is fine and selecting the Images folder is fine. Since I want to eventually select the Files folder, I must expand the Source1 folder. On my XP test machine, this returns immediately with the two subfolders. There is a 90-second delay on my Vista machine before I can see and select the subfolder.

I have noticed that there is some information cached during this process because it is much faster a second time, even after a reboot.

Does anyone have a suggestion about a system setting that can be modified to fix this problem? I have already modified the Folder options to always show icons, and not thumbnails.

Thanks,
Wayne
