Ok, I just got this new computer with Vista 64 on it and I am having three major problems:
1. I get a display driver error "atikmdag" with my external monitor
2. FileMaker Pro 9 installed just fine, but it won't open - I get "not responding" and then I have to close it. I uninstalled and reinstalled and checked for updates on both Vista and Filemaker. Nothing worked.
3. eFax Messenger will not even install
I am going crazy. I have googled all three of these issues, called for help, emailed for help and I can't get any answers.
Can anyone here help? Is Vista working on these compatibility issues or is it up to the software companies to catch up? This is very frustrating as I have wasted my whole day trying to get these things to work.
Q1) If you have a ATI video card or chip, then check to make sure that you are installing the latest 8.8 driver version. If you are, then you may just need to redownload or reinstall it again if it had become corrupted.
Q2 & Q3) You might see if using Compatibility Mode with these programs will allow them to run properly afterwards. This tutorial will help show you more about how to do this if needed.
Thanks. I was so hopeful about your solutions, but neither of them worked unfortunately. Turns out FileMaker does not work on 64 and neither does eFax no matter what, so I called hp and they are sending me 32 to overwrite 64 and that should fix the software problems.
As for the display driver error, I switched to windows classic view and oddly enough that seemed to fix that issue for now.
Sorry that did not help you. Some utility programs will just not work in 64 bit Vista without them being made to support 64 bit sometimes.
The 8.9 ATI video drivers are rumored to be released sometime within a couple of weeks. They may work better for you. Keep an eye on that link for the latest versions.
Have you tried the Windows Vista Basic color scheme to see if the display driver will run without the error in it for a better looking desktop than Classic? Maybe Aero could be the problem with it.
Have you resolved the Filemaker Pro v9 problem? I have had the same 'not responding' problem on my Dell Laptop running Vista home Premium 32 bit. Tried to get help on Filemaker Forum. Had some suggestions but nothing has worked.
I ended up installing vista 32 over 64 and then reinstalled the software. I had a few problems. At first FileMaker didn't respond. I reinstalled it several times trying different things like installing it in compatability mode. I also downloaded all the updates and remember calling FileMaker for help, too. Something ended up working - not sure if it was the compatability mode or downloading the updates... but it works like a charm now. If you call FileMaker, they are very helpful and it doesn't sound like they outsource their help desk. Good Luck.
