More Missing Restore Points...

I too have missing restore points, but am not sure why. Also, I have more problems than just that, which is why this best be its own thread and in General Discussion.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64 bit on an HP Pavillion. My OS is running on the C drive, and a 10gb Recovery partition exists as drive D, but is not set to be backed-up by system restore.

Here is the breakdown of everything that has happened with my computer in the last two days:

On Thursday night, I started up my computer, and saw that I couldn't get onto the internet using Firefox. But, I didn't need the internet so shut down my computer hoping it would be fixed in the morning.

However, Friday morning I booted up my computer and still could not get onto the internet. I was connected to the network and it said I had internet connection, and my Windows Sidebar Weather Widget was working well, and displaying what I assume to be the right temperature. AIM, Outlook, IE, and Firefox, however, were all unable to connect to the internet.

Usually, when I am unable to connect to the internet, it is because a Windows update was installed, and I perform a system restore and everything works. I opened up System restore, however, and sure enough a windows update had been installed the night before.

I attempted a restore, but was informed that a System Restore could not be performed because I had corrupt data on my disk. I attempted to perform a disk check, but was informed that I can't perform a disk check while using my disk, so I scheduled one for when I restarted my computer, restarted my computer, and nothing happened. I tried to same thing in Safe Mode, etc.

Giving this up, for the time, I actually stumbled across the corrupted file; a folder in my Java Runtime Environment 1.6 folder. Perhaps unwisely, I attempted to solve the problem by deleting the folder. This, however, simply deleted all the good files and then informed me I could not delete the corrupt folder.

Eventually I was able to run chkdsk by reinstalling autochk.exe, as per this tutorial, and setting to run on boot as per this tutorial. The disk is no longer corrupt, and the disk check was able to do it's job, and I can now restore my system.

However, now all of my system restore files are missing. I have plenty of space, and definately HAD restore points before attempting to uncorrupt my disk.

As of now, my internet claims to be working, as is my Weather Widget, but nothing else can connect. Also, programs randomly stop working. Every 5 minutes or so, Google Installer "stops working" and windows checks for a solution. (Windows help and support doesn't have internet access either.) AIM has stopped working, and when I close Firefox, it shuts down normally, but then informs me it too has "stopped working."
Can anyone suggest anything? I'm terribly stumped. I'm very ready to reformat my computer. If I was sure I had all my install disks I would have by now, but I was hoping there might be one last thing for me to try.

Thank you so much for suffering through my endlessly long post and trying to make the most sense of it that you can.

Hello cyclotis04, welcome to Vista forums!

It sounds as if you are beyond 'repair' since you don't have a Vista disc to do a Repair Install.

Though you do have a "Recovery Partition" to do a re-install from if need be.
Seeing that it's an HP machine these instructions will aid you if you decide on that option.

HP Recovery Center

Be advised that it will bring the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.
The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.
It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.
You want to try system recovery not system restore, unless you have good restore points!

Keep us informed!

Later  Ted
