Dual Boot XP with preinstalled Vista Hp Pavilion Elite

I cannot figure this one out. I have an Hp desktop and cannot get the XP to boot from disk. I have tried partitioning the unallocated space and formatting it too. I do not have the Vista cd, only the recovery disk and I am afraid of clean installing XP using only the XP oem and Vista recovery (i don't think the recovery disk actually installs Vista). How can I get my XP onto my Hp??

Let me extend on this a bit=

I cannot figure this one out. I have an Hp desktop that came with Vista preinstalled, so no install CD only recovery disk made at home. Cannot get the windows XP to boot from disk.
*I have tried partitioning the unallocated space and formatting it into a new drive.
*I have 2 hard drives and one is waiting for the XP.
*I have 'boot from cd' as first boot option, then from driver.
I have tried to restart the computer to boot from the cd and I get an error of some sort saying that there is a virus or some other error. I think that is from the Vista program that I read about that won't let XP run, like older OS do for the new OS.
I do not have the Vista cd, only the recovery disk and I am afraid of clean installing XP using only the XP oem and Vista recovery (i don't think the recovery disk actually installs Vista). How can I get my XP onto my Hp??

Better yet, does anyone have a step by step for Hp Pavilion Elite M9150F?

The recovery disc is a clone of the hard drive when you first got the computer and started using. Vista shouldn't block xp cause vista hasn't started to load cause your booting from the cd. Are you saying that you have a XP OEM disc.

yes that is what i have. would the recovery, or clone disc, install the vista after clean installing the xp, if so, that would be so much easier? or do you think hp might hand me a copy of the vista that came preinstalled?

They will give you the same clone that you already have. I would think it would be alright to do that just make sure your not installing Xp on the C: drive cause that is where vista needs to be installed not sure about that haven't tried it. Also that would be easier to do cause then you won't have to repair vista's startup and then add xp to the boot menu.

i have tried those steps. when i restart to boot XP from the oem cd, it says at the top left
WINDOWS SETUP
and reads at the bottom all the drivers and etc. that it acts like it's installing from XP. then half way through the install it goes to an all blue screen that tells me that there is a prblem of some sort and says something about a viruse. I know for a fact that there is no viruses, plenty of security...
I does not show that it is installing windows xp like i remember it saying when i worked on my laptop.
WINDOWS XP SETUP

If i try and boot the xp cd while vista is running, i don't have the option of installing
if i restart with the xp cd in the cddrive, i don't get the option of selecting a drive to install it on, only the option to boot from cd and that isn't going anywhere. i feel i might have to suffer with no xp for my games until i get a new vista disc

There are other problems than can occur on a dual boot system. Have you tried running your games in XP compatability mode?

I should give you a warning. If you do plan to install windows xp on your hard drive, make sure you have a backup of Vista on a CD or DVD. The XP will overwrite your MBR making it impossible to boot from the recovery partition on your hard drive. That partition will be rendered useless.

The reason that you may not be able to install WinXP on your drive is probably because WinXP has no default SATA drivers. It cannot see your hard drive. My guess is that you need to slipstream an Intel SATA driver on your XP disc first.

Send a message back if you need help with that.

That would be a good idea, if I knew how. Would anyone care to detail me on what XP compatibility mode is?

SnarkyTwit, would that allow me to install XP without doing anything further to Vista?
