Solved 870718 - Location tab

Hello Hamidi,

Welcome to the forums.

Which folder is missing the tab. The tab only exists for user folders that the system needs to keep track of. Contacts, pictures, downloads, video etc. Folders that you create will not have a locations tab.

Hope this is helpful.

oh really? i didn't know. i thought like links in linux, location tab is available for all folders.
is it fixed in vista and i can't add any other folders to the list?
is it part of the OS? or it's part of the FS?
does it differ from where in disk manager that i mount a partition in an ntfs empty folder?
thx

I don't know much about linux. The location tab is for folders that are used by the OS. Example, if you want to save a pic from the net, windows will want to use the 'Pictures' folder. If you have moved the folder by the drag and drop method rather than through the 'Locations Tab', Windows won't know where it is. If you drag and drop the Contacts folder to another place without using the locations tab, Windows Mail will not know where to look for email addresses. If I remember right, some if not all of these folders will be recreated on reboot. Then if you right click an email and click 'add sender to contacts' it will go in the new folder and not the one you moved. Dragging and droping the personal folders (as I did in Win2k), to my E:\ drive was my first big mistake when I started using Vista.

i think i've got my answer.
but we've another thing in vista too. let me ask it as another question:
how can "Documents and Settings" be just the same folder as "Users"?
thx

Hi Hamidi,

the Links system that you are talking about in Linux would be the symbolic links system this is available in vista and in fact is used extensively by the operating system to enable the backwards compatibility features where statard windows folders have changed in vista

NTFS symbolic link - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The MY DOCUMENTS folder in XP is now the DOCUMENTS folder in vista and a symbolic link is in place so that those programs that by default place files in MY DOCUMENTS are re-directed by the link to the DOCUMENTS Folder in the new USERS .. Tree
