I have a dell inspiron 530 with a DVD capable drive. I am also trying to use Maxell Discs which are x16(not sure what that means.
Any Help?

Hi Ben,

Is your DVD drive read only, or is it able to write to discs? If it is also a writer, can it write to a DVD or just a CD? Assuming that it is a DVD writer, then I would suggest a different brand of discs. Some drives just do not like certain brands. Personally, I use Verbatim discs. The 16x, by the way, refers to the maximum write speed of the disc - they can all be written to at various rates upto this speed but no faster.

I'll agree with Dwarf with regards the brand of disc, I know I used a particular brand on 2 XP and 1 WinME machines without problems, but when I got my Vista machine they were no good, they could be read but not written to.
I phoned up the manufacturers and asked them what brand they used on the machine and bought those and have had no problems. ;)

This may be a stupid question, It is late here :sleepy:

but is this a problem with DVD - R not working whilst DVD + R will work.

I do remember when DVD writers started out certain drives could only write -R others +R and the good ones Both.

I have a DVD recorder (attached to TV) that only writes the one type (+R) so this issue still exists in some writers.

you may want to check the specs on the actual drive

Download Imgburn (free), put a blank disc in your drive and put Imgburn in write mode. Copy and paste all the information from the right window here.
