Error in Event Viewer

Hi all, this is my 1st post at this site, hope some1 can help me :)

Anyway i have an error in event viewer that pops up everytime i have a freeze (sometimes a reboot is required)

Its the Kerberos athentication error, i know MS says ignore it, however whenever i have a freeze its the only error to pop up in event viewer.

Now i run Home Premium 64Bit and am not connected to a domain so i really dont need this security package trying to do its thing do i?

How can i stop it as i feel it may solve my freezing prob? i've heard you can through Gpedit.msc however home premium doesn't have this snap in. Is there some 3rd party tweaking tool that'll let me shut kerberos off to see what happens?

Thanks a lot for your time

Matt

Welcome to the forums!

First, maybe start off by giving a little more detail about what the error in your event viewer is. If you have to copy and paste it in there, go ahead. What are you normally doing when this freezes? What happens when it freezes? Auto reboot, or forcefully shut it down?

Post what you can so we can help.

Thanks

Hi acadamis2000 for your reply, this is the error msg i recieve;

Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number.

The event ID reads: 15016 - Source: HTTPEvent

Im usually in IE7.0 when the freeze occurs, i dont always have to reboot (Forcefull, never auto) somtimes i can hit Ctrl Shift Esc for the Task Manager and End Task for IE. Then restart it and alls fine. These freezes seem random, though they do tend to happen at either one of two websites www.guru3d.com or www.teamtalk.com which i find strange.

I've tried running IE7 64Bit same occurs, and IE No Addons and its freezed up on me.

Are you on a domain or workgroup. Kerberos errors on a domain are serious. If you get them in a workgroup, they can be a pain to fix.

Actually, when you set up your computer on your home network to access the internet, you join an automatic workgroup aptly title WORKGROUP by M$... (go figure)
To check this, hit *windows key* Pause/Break to bring up the system menu. (Or go to control panel->system) Scroll down to almost the bottom, to the
Computer Name, Domain, and Work Group Settings. It will say workgroup: WORKGROUP most likely. This is your home network workgroup, and everyone should be on it on your network (i think)

~Lordbob

EDIT: By domain, i think SCSIraidGURU means the domain the website is hosted at? I think....? What did you mean SCSIraidGURU?

To lordbob75, i dont have a home network, it is simply one computer with an internet connection and in no way networked with others.

Am hoping to find someway to shut off kerberos, Gpedit.msc doesn't come as part of vista home premium.

I have been living with it for a long time until, a couple of months ago, I stumbled into this link Event ID 15016 — HTTP Service Authentication and fixed it.

Scroll down a bit until you see a post titled: Event ID 15016-Disabled. It involves a simple Registry edit.

Please let us know the outcome.

Have you checked for any errors in the Device Manager? You may have a driver problem, e.g. graphics or a problem with IE7. You can try running this one without add-ons (Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools).

Device Manager reports Zero errors, pretty sure its not GFX drivers, used multiple drivers and never made a difference. I've also tried IE7.0 with no add-ons and its done the same.

Its like i said everytime i get a freeze i get one error in event viewer always the same one at the same time of the freeze.

Thanks

I've had a look in reliability monitor, comes up with lots of application failures, most, like 95%, are IE stopped working, one was winmail stopped working, another was super_pi stopped working.

And nothing seemingly related to your system crashes?
I suspect this is not related to Kerberos at all, but if you are sure, you are sure. I know of no fix for this one.

I would start from the bottom with virus scanning. Download Malwarebytes and Spybot from Download.com. Scan your computer from safe mode. Try the Malicious Software Removal Tool as well.

If nothing, run Memory Diagnostics. Maybe your computer came with a Hard Disk Diagnostics Program? Otherwise, try Checkdisk.

Next, concentrate on IE7. There are numerous sites dealing with various IE7 errors if you Google. Option: re-install.

Next, start with any cards you have installed, like graphics and sound. Try uninstalling and reinstalling and other drivers. Try another screen resolution.

Post back anything suspicious. You also have various recovery options in Vista, you will find several described in the Tutorials on this site.

In the end, this may proove a case for a re-installation of Vista, but if you have a lot of software and/or no backup, it might be worth going through the entire package above.

Super_pi, you're overclocking! Yes I can see that. Then, we may have a totally different story. You should revert back to original settings first. If that fixes the issue, post a question to the overclocking section instead. If this does not help, go through the list above.

Thanks for your replys Submarine, i am OC'ing yes, however i dont believe its related as i've pretty much had this prob since i got vista. I had vista 32bit home prem 1st had this same prob tried killing my OC no effect, tried re-installing again no effect.

I then upgraded to vista 64 when i got 4GB RAM, had same prob after a while, re-installed 64bit again no effect problems re-occured after a while.

As for other upgrades i've not changed much, only my CPU and GFX, used to have a E6420 now a Q9550 (Very Recent) as for GFX had an 8500GT then put in the 8800GTS like a year ago.

I've already got MBAM scanned a few times and its found nothing but cookies, i've tried my BullGuard Anti Virus and its found nowt also. Done a chkdisk, erm think its /sfc scannow tried that and nothing.

Though i've had big probs this morn, didnt wanna play at all!!! manged to get task manager loaded and found svchost.exe using 3.5GB or RAM!!!!! so i managed to end the process and things got a better, also found System Idle Process at 97-98 for CPU (This is under the processes tab in task)

Can i post screen dumps here?

I may have misunderstood your problem. Is it IE7 or is it entire system that freezes?
If it is IE7, why not start here: Tips for solving problems with Internet Explorer. There are other sites out there, giving stepwise approaches too. Google.

CPU idle on 97-98 is normal, nothing to worry about. Having svchost running 3.5GB sounds a lot, but this process is involved in a lot of things and I cannot say if this is normal or not. Someone else probably can. It is usually no process you want to kill. I sometimes use Process Explorer to figure out what's generating various errors. Latest version here. I do not know if it runs on 64 bit system but there is a version that does. This may give you an idea what it is doing.

If you have total system freezes, I was hoping you would see something like this:
View attachment 8766
That would give you an indication of the problem. The red dots for application failures are mainly my own little IE7 problems. I am right now focusing on another issue and will deal with these later. So if you manage to find a solution to your problem, you may be able to help me with mine later.

Kerberos: I do not know very much about this, but I think this is something you use in a server environment, not on a stand alone home PC. Every time you boot, you should get this error because, as MS says, your Vista configuration does not have and does not require a security package for HTTP service authentication. Then it should be gone and not appear until the next time you boot. If you get it without booting, there is a problem, for sure, and I am clueless. Start with more virus scanning with other programs and from safe mode. When trouble shooting, do not overclock. Overclock again when system is stable. You have in fact done a lot with your machine, do you have dual boot system too?

Its usually IE7, however im sure theres been a couple of occasions wheres its not been. Though i cant be certain as i've done so many re-installs now im lost a little.

About svchost 3.5GB is certainly not normal, especially when idle it just kept getting bigger and bigger system almost ground to a halt until i killed it.

You could be rite about it not being kerberos, i run sfc check again, and it said that it found corrupt files, but windows couldnt fix them all. Also i have a program called easy clean, and it found boat loads of Registry probs, deleted like 1500 entries, and its still finding more!

Really considering another Clean Install, or just toss vista out and keep XP Pro as im running both and XP Pro has no probs at the mo! Wait for Win7 to appear, already seems pretty good in alpha!

I would suggest you put your computer back to spec's and trobleshoot. Then post back with some facts. Then someone may be able to help you. By the way, saw someone else having problem with a dual boot system; he had installed something, GPU I think, from XP, and this somehow screwed things up in Vista. By uninstalling the drivers in XP and then reinstalling in Vista and then in XP, he fixed his problem Don't know if this could work for you though. Merry Christmas and good luck!

Yeah think i'll have to give that ago, still dont understand why XP isn't affected. Getting some other weird **** in vista too, its doesn't seem to recognise my processor now lol it thinks its an E8300 Wolfdale, when its an Q9550 Yorkie!! XP recogniseses it fine lol

Maybe it has something to do with HAL, who knows! lol

Like i say though, this problem is not recent, had it way before upgrades, and way way before i started dual booting. Maybe it doesn't like my mobo chipset, only major component that hasn't changed. Wanted to blame my PSU as its only 550w and i think only has 30A across the 12v rails, but again that would affect XP too. Decided to test it, installed Crysis under XP and ran fine :(

I'll try returning everything to stock see what happens, but for me Vista just doesn't seem to be working out. Which is a shame because i quite like it :(

Anyway cheers for your thoughts and help Sub

Merry Xmas
