Solved Some questions about pictures and "open with"

I am not certain that this can be done in vista, but... Whenever I open a folder containing pictures, the picture files appear as generic icons and don't show their thumbnail. How can I get my picture files to show as thumbnails?

Also, I use several picture editors (Picasa, Fastone, Elements 4, etc). Can I get them all to appear in "Open with" recommended section. When I right click on a picture file and select open with, I get recommended and other programs. I guess, now that I have fiddled with this a little, that what I really want to be able to do is to place the programs I want into the recommended section and remove those that I don't want there (like put them into the Other Programs section. May I assume that once I know how to do this (if it is possible), that whenever I get an "open with," I should be able to customize it?

Well, you should be able to just go to the view tab in the folder you have open and select the icons instead of being set to list or details. View attachment 8714

You can also go to folder options in Conrol Panel and go to the view tab and set these two like I have them.

And go to Performance Info and Tools in control Panel then Adjust Visual Effects and see if this is checked.View attachment 8716

As to your Open With Programs, I think changing some settings in Default Programs might do what you want. Start Menu-Default Programs.

Hi Flycaster,

In addition, the "Open With" is used to select a new default program that will be used to open that file extension type with. For the thumbnails to work properly in Vista, it is usually best to leave Windows Photo Gallery as the default program.

Thanks, Airbot, got the picture files/folders showing pics. Only unsolved issue is that I would like to have several options to do the same thing within "open with." That is, I'd like to have several picture editors to choose from when I select "open with." I understand the default choice, but isn't that different than having several choices within "open with?" Can it be that Vista doesn't offer several choices of apps that do the same thing, but rather just the default one?

Yeah, you're welcome flycaster,

I believe you can pick what program you want to open open for different files, you'd just have to use browse and pick the program. View attachment 8722 then View attachment 8723

Peacock bass. Put into SoFL waters about 20 years ago; imported from the Amazon (but this one was caught in Venezuela as they don't grow that big here) Pound for pound, at least twice as strong as largemouth bass.

Anyway, thanks for the Open With help (which is what I was coming up with), but I find it disappointing. Not your response, but that it seems that Vista makes one go an extra step or two with the browse option. I'm not sure-I could be wrong, but I think XP allowed one to put in whatever programs they wanted to into Open With.
