Monitor flickers when programs launch

stumpy

Hi guys

Spec - Dell Inspiron 531, AMD 64 Dual processor 5000, 2 gig ram, 32 bit vista home, Nvidia GForce 6150SE nForce 430, IIyama Prolite E380S.

Over the last couple of weeks my monitor has started to flicker for a second or so everytime a program launches. I've checked my drivers etc and they all seem upto date and I've checked all my hardware is ok.

I can live with it but my wife has been nagging me to death about it !

Any ideas??

Contact your dealer or iiyama service center for the backlight replacement when the
screen is dark, flickering or not lighting up.

Back Lighting on LCD screens should not "flicker" Could be a voltage/PSU, GPU, bad monitor issue.

LCD screens have an array of pixels constantly lit by a
backlight. The constancy of the light removes the type of
flicker found in CRT screens (phosphors pulsing with each
refresh cycle). Instead, an LCD pixel has upper and lower
plates with grooves cut perpendicular to each other.
These grooves align the crystals to form channels
for the backlight to pass through to the front of the panel.
The amount of light emitted depends upon the orientation of
the liquid crystals and is proportional to the applied voltage.

I had a similar problem with my older computer. It turned out to be a bad video card, I had it replaced and everything was all fine. If you have a laptop though, video cards can be almost imposible to replace or change out. I could be wrong though...

Oops. I somehow got the idea that it was a laptop.
Anyways, desktop cards are easy to replace. Laptops arent. :D

No I wasn't confused about the Video card, I was confused about whether his computer was a laptop or not.

All mobos have integrated graphics (or most do at least) and the one on my mobo probably isn't too bad. But all graphics cards in laptops are integrated (I could be wrong though, but i know most are).

I have built my own system, so I have no issues with replacing parts..... :D

EDIT:
More and more are. For example I have a Mobility MXM III radeon x1900 card that can just be pulled out and replaced, as can my Core2Duo T7600G Processor. Most newer cards are MXM III or MXM IV cards. Only budget (low end notebooks) are still integrated on the MB.

Thats not entirely true. As I said, most mobos have integrated graphics, its just that lower end computers don't have a graphics card, which is why they are lower end.

Wait..... So you CAN upgrade the video card on laptops?? I asked about it one time, and they said it was not possible cuz there was no spot...

Could be wrong though. (Looks like I am)

AH!

The world is clearer now..... :)
Thanks for the info. Are they like extra expensive or what? Obviously they have different mobos, but are they huge? how does it work? Or uber small video cards?
