No video in media players

Hey all, i've about had it with this problem. My comp (running vista 32 bit) for some reason refuses to play videos in media players. I tried googling it and got several options, from vista codec updates to graphic card codec updates (nvidia geforce 9300). I thought the problem may have been with the avi files themselves, so i converted them to no avail. Vids online (using like flash or shockwave) work fine, i can surf youtube all day. I updated the graphics drivers on my video card, and i've exhausted every option that i could find or think of. Plz if anyone has a solution it would be greatly appreciated. I surfed through topics and decided general discussion would be a decent place for this thread; if it isn't, i apologize.

First try VLC Media Player...Free.
This will tell us if it's a Windows problem or not.

thanks for the suggestion. tried km player, no dice. :(

Another fact that may help the diagnosis: If i try to play an emulator (i have a lot of old Super nintendo and sega genesis games), My comp wont play the video for those either. And again...it'll play the audio, just no video

Fact #2: The first day i got this comp (christmas) i updated the geforce and audio codecs. After the first restart I got the problem of the black screen after login and I had to start the explorer.exe manually by crtl-alt-del. Since then i've rolled back my video card, but have the same problem still. Could these things be related?

Interesting .I had similar trouble on XP a few years ago and helped me Indeo
May you help Free-Codecs.com : Download Ligos Indeo Codec 5.11 : Video codecs originally developed by Intel, but later taken over by Ligos

I don't know ver 5.11 will work on Vista.ver 5.2 yes but it is commercial version

Get this codec pack.

"When dealing with codecs, more does not equal better.
Having the least amount on your system is the best configuration.
This is exactly what the Vista Codec Package does for you.

You will no longer be restricted to using a specific player.
Windows MediaPlayer and Vista MediaCenter will be able to play all your files"

This is not so easy what you think.I also like and using Vista Codeck Package but he need some kind of main video codeck (this is not standard codeck honesty say)- he can't play any video in any format even if he use player which don't require any standard codecks, and as far I know only Indeo include some kind of thing what he need.Indeo included many non-typical codecks (thus probably is commercial now) but also don't include many standard codecks (it was with ver 5.1 on XP I used them with XP Codeck Pack and everything work together perfect how now is with ver.5.2 I don't know

yeah that was one of the "fixes" i found while googling...doesn't work.

and my comp freezes up when i try to install the other codec, so i dunno what's up.

Try repairing your install. Sounds like a stupid thought, but worth a try.

May try re-register Indeo codecks (x32 systems have buildin Indeo)

Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on this file as administrator if you use UAC) and ype

regsvr32 /u ir32_32.dll
regsvr32 /u ir41_32.ax
regsvr32 /u ir41_qc.dll
regsvr32 /u ir50_32.dll
regsvr32 /u ir50_qc.dll
regsvr32 /u ir50_qcx.dll
regsvr32 ir32_32.dll
regsvr32 ir41_32.ax
regsvr32 ir41_qc.dll
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll
regsvr32 ir50_qc.dll
regsvr32 ir50_qcx.dll

If no help you have to install Indeo or repair install (what said @lordbob75)

You never said what error messages you were getting, that always helps, but if it was buggin me that much, I would reinstall Vista and then install ffdshow and Haali media splitter, and NO OTHER CODECS! These 2 programs will enable Windows Media Player to handle just about any video file. If it still won't play I would suspect the video files themselves are no good.

Hi; I don't think my problem is quite the same but perhaps related. I can't get WMP in Vista to play .WMV files, and a few other types that I did not note. I found this funny since .WMV are windows media video files, right? Anyway, downloaded Vista Codec Pack and Indeo 5.11 (something else had popped up with an Indeo issue). Anyway, none of this worked. I did get VLC player and it is now associated with all vid file extensions and it works (so far). So, am I missing a step? Is there an install proceedure other than just downloading codecs that is needed? Are they in a location associated to WMP or not? Do I need to somehow install or associate the Vista Codecs I downloaded with WMP?
