Vista and a Kodak printer.

I am at my wits end. I build and work on computers as a sideline, so am reasonably competent with them. However, this one has me completely stumped. I am trying to get a brand new Kodak Printer hooked up to a friend's Dell laptop and the two machines absolutely will not talk to each other. We even took the first printer back and got another one.

Dell Studio laptop
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Kodak ESP5 All-in-One

A copy and paste from one of numerous e-mails sent to Kodak support.....

The printer will make copies just fine. It appears as the default printer in my printer settings. When I try to print, it is listed as an available printer. Under the listed printers, it is selected to use on-line. I have tried setting the on-line option from the administrator option in the right click options. The only devices I have connected to the computer are this printer and a USB wireless mouse.

I have tried 3 different USB cables and each of the available USB ports on the laptop.

I have uninstalled the software from the CD and downloaded the drivers from the website with the same result. There is a printer icon in the startup items in the taskbar. When the USB cable is plugged in, a red X flashes and the error message is, "Printer Communication Error" and asks me to be sure the USB cable is OK and to turn the AIO on and off. However, when I unplug the USB cable, the error changes to, "Printer not responding" and asks me to be sure printer is on, USB cable is connected and the print queue is on-line.

The reason I suspect this is related to Vista is her daughter bought the same printer and installed it on her XP system with no problems at all.

Sorry if this is too long-winded. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

I am having the same problem. I have VISTA Ultimate SP1. I checked the logs and it tells me that Kodaksvs.exe crashed, then the print spooling system crashed. Kodak sent me a new USB cable, but no joy.Tried their cleaning program and reinstalling from the web but no joy. Requested that they post the entire download of the AIO installer so it could downloaded and installed instead of the web and they reacted as if they had no idea of what I was talking about. Since the problem couldn't be resolved by their standard procedure, which means they couldn't find it the manual, I asked for the next level tech help. The person who I was talking to put me on hold and then said his Supervisor wouldn't come out of the office. Then they blamed it on my motherboard and said I had to go to the MB manufacturer and download the proper drivers. My USB HP 1320 works fine, the USB mem sticks work fine, my WD MyBook works fine. Every thing works but the Kodak 5500 AIO wont work with USB. I was able to hook it up to my network with a print server from Cables to go and I can print to it, but cannot scan to the computer. Its definitely a Kodak software issue.

Thanks for posting, fiscokid, because I thought I was losing it. It's troubling to me though, that even when I hooked up my 6 year old hp printer and let Vista find the drivers (it was correctly recognized), it still wouldn't print to my printer either. I'm concerned that any printer will have the same result. This Kodak printer installed perfectly on an older XP computer, so there has to be a Vista conflict somewhere...

My Computer

Please understand the the Vista driver model and the XP driver model are different. So the fact that said item worked under XP, means nothing when it comes to Vista.

Vista has a compatibility tool that looks at your system and informs you of pontential problems "before" upgrading. Likewise you can also go here and look up your software or hardware to see if there is a potential compatiblilty issue. - Windows Vista Compatibility Center

As for your problem, you will need to go the the manufactures website to find driver(s) for Vista, and if you have Vista x64, you'll need to find 64-bit drivers.

Thanks, sygnus21. I trying to get all the input I can. This is a brand new Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 32 bit. We took the first printer back as we thought it was defective. Downloading the Vista drivers - twice - from the manufacturer's website resulted in the same issues. We installed the printer on the XP machine to ensure that it was not a defective printer.

Draclvr,

I've read your psot a few times and am not sure what the problem is? Could you explain whats going on, and what is is you're trying to do?

All I got is you're trying to hook the printer up to Vista and it doen't work. What errors are you getting? Also could you point me to the download link for the drivers?

Thanks.

THis is a fresh full install of Vista Ultimate 32 bit on new drives (raid 1). The drivers are kodak. I followed the install/uninstall directions explicitly, but still no joy. The application starts and then crashes.

fiscokid,

My question was directed at Draclvr. I've not looked at your problem. Unless you have the exact problem with the same printer, It might be better for you to start your own thread as this can easily get confusing between yours and Draclvr's issues.

Also this is considered a form of thread hijacking - where one person takes over another's thread.

You could watch this thread and chime in, but remember this is Draclvr's thread since his posted it.

Just trying to be helpful to everyone.

And the only errors "she" gets are after installing either from the Kodak CD driver installation or after the Vista download from their website. When the USB cable is plugged in, the error message is, "Printer Communication Error" and asks me to be sure the USB cable is OK and to turn the AIO on and off. However, when I unplug the USB cable, the error changes to, "Printer not responding" and asks me to be sure printer is on, USB cable is connected and the print queue is on-line. I apologize for not having the exact wording, but I sent the laptop home with my friend who lives about 50 miles away.

I have made sure the Kodak printer is selected as the default printer and that it is on-line. There is no network involved. This is a direct USB connection from the printer to the laptop. I have tried all available USB ports and 3 different USB cables.

I have uninstalled all instances of the drivers and simply plugged the Kodak printer in and rebooted to let Vista find the drivers that make it happy. It recognizes the correct printer and the Device Manager shows no issues with the device. Same result. So obviously there is SOME communication going on between the printer and the laptop.

Before downloading the drivers from the Kodak website, I uninstalled the CD drivers down to the driver package.

EDIT: Oops, sorry. Forgot the link to the drivers. I didn't download the firmware update since I cannot get the laptop to communicate with the printer. Of course, they only offer it as a behemoth of a file at 250 MB.

Kodak Drivers

As a moderator at a gaming website, I understand thread protocols etc. But since I posted my issue 2 weeks ago and it wasn't until fiscokid posted that I got a response, I'm inclined to forgive him this time! I do thank you, sygnus21, because I've never had to cry "uncle" before is resolving a computer issue and this one has completely stumped me.

I believe I have the same problem and maybe we can work it out at the same time. I have an AIO 5500. The symptoms appear to be the same. As far as hijacking a thread, your out of line sygnus21. The only difference I see at this time is that I updated the firmware on my Kodak printer by using another computer with XP on it. However that didn't change anything. The software installs, Vista finds the drivers, reports that it installed without a problem then a moment later I get an error that there is a communication problem just like Draclvr is receiving. changed cables but no joy.The errors are too coincidental to require 2 threads.

My Computer

OK, let me see if I've got the gist of the problem(s) here...

You are able to install the software, including the drivers? Have you checked device manager to see if there are any error codes?

You say the USB cables are in working order - have you switched cables. Are the cables connected to a hub? If so, is it a powered USB hub? Are the cables USB 2.0?

Are there any issues with the USB ports as reported in device manager? Have you tried using a different USB port?

Answering those questions, try this...

Download the drivers and printer software from Kodak's website. Install the downloaded software and follow on-screen instruction. Reboot, If you're asked to install drivers, do it from device manager and reboot. Does it work now?

Make sure you do not plug in the USB cable untill told to do so when installing the software!!!

Fiscokid, I will try to help with your problem in this thread, but priority goes to Draclvr. Please try the above procedures I mentioned and let me know.

I will agree that something fishy is going on with Kodak's software and Vista. I'll look through the owner's manual to see if there are any special procedures required.

As I said, no errors in Device Manager. I installed the downloaded 250 MB driver package and installed from Device Manager. I did not plug in until directed. Also, as stated, I used 3 different USB cables (which are 2.0) in every available port. Device Manager shows no errors in any of the USB ports. This is directly from the printer to the laptop with no hub. The owner's manual with the printer was utterly useless.

So, I have already exhausted your great suggestions.

Am I correct to be concerned when I allowed the laptop to recognize my older HP printer through the USB cable and install the drivers from Vista and it still wouldn't work after recognizing the correct printer?

Can't tell you how much I appreciate the help, sygnue. My other problem is the owner of the components is a middle-aged woman who is trying to learn how to use her first computer. She has no idea what is going on, let alone what to do. She also lives 50 miles away. I posted a couple of weeks ago and after I didn't get any responses here for a week, I sent the laptop and printer back home with her.

Thank you for your reply. Hopefully this will help the both of us.
1. Yes during install a window comes up to install drivers. The instructions are to make sure the printer is on and plug the USB cable in. As soon as I plug the cable in the printer is correctly identified drivers found and it reports the drivers were successfully installed. No driver request comes up after reboot.
2.All cables are 2.0. 1 cable came from Kodak in response to this problem. My original cable was 10 ft so I switched to a 6 ft knowing this can be a problem to some. No hub.
3. I tried different ports front to back, no joy
4.There are no problems in device manager USB or otherwise
5. Made sure that .net 2.0 or higher was installed
6. I cannot count how many times I have gone through the install process. Even though the web site states the download is 250mb it is actually 1.68 mb. When you execute it it connects to the internet and downloads a 250mb and installs. I requested that they post the entire download to the site so it can be downloaded and installed from the Hard drive or from CD and they acted like they had no idea what I was requesting. I also have broad band. They download goes pretty quick and the there are no pauses in the download.
7. I also turned off the Vista annoying confirmations to see if that would help.
8. I also changed the speed of the USB in the BIOS, no joy there either.
9. I was able to successfully update the firmware in the printer by using a laptop and xp.
10. When the computer is restarted or turned on from cold start the icon in the tray comes up for a second and then has the red X and a printer communication error window (part of the Kodak software program) comes up. When I try to find the Kodak printer in the connect to a kodak printer window it does not show.
11. To clarify above. The printer does show in the printers window under printers a faxes menu as available (Windows).
12. My guess is that there are registry entries that are not installing properly. This would cause the crash of the exe's I had mentioned before.
13. When I uninstalled the Kodak program I used their clean unistall program as well as CCleaner.
14. I also tried running the program in XP mode once.
15 I have the printer working by connecting it to a network printserver made by CablesToGo. It will print but I cannot use any of the scan abilities or other features.

My Computer

You are echoing every single issue I'm having with this Dell Vista laptop and the Kodak printer.

I manually deleted the Kodak registry entries. I also then ran CCleaner.

Have you tried to install a different printer to see if you get a repeat?

My Computer

Am I correct to be concerned when I allowed the laptop to recognize my older HP printer through the USB cable and install the drivers from Vista and it still wouldn't work after recognizing the correct printer?

My other problem is the owner of the components is a middle-aged woman who is trying to learn how to use her first computer. She has no idea what is going on, let alone what to do. She also lives 50 miles away.

Yes, I would be concerned as there might be an issue with her USB ports. Since you no longer have physical possession of the items, it would be hard to assess what else might be going on with the system. So...

As soon as I plug the cable in the printer is correctly identified drivers found and it reports the drivers were successfully installed. No driver request comes up after reboot. - This tells me that the drivers are installed; so now we have a communication problem with the software, not drivers.

There are no problems in device manager USB or otherwise - Good

I was able to successfully update the firmware in the printer by using a laptop and xp. - So does the printer and software work under XP? This will tell you if it's a Vista only problem.

When the computer is restarted or turned on from cold start the icon in the tray comes up for a second and then has the red X and a printer communication error window (part of the Kodak software program) comes up. When I try to find the Kodak printer in the connect to a kodak printer window it does not show. - Hmmm...If It doesn't show here but it shows in the "Printer" window under Vista, then again, it sounds like a software communication problem, not a driver issue.

The printer does show in the printers window under printers a faxes menu as available (Windows). - Can you print a test page from there? Right click the printer, "Properties", "General" tab, "Print test Page" if this works, it will confirm 1- that the drivers are properly installed, and 2- there IS a communication problem between Vista and Kodak software!

12. My guess is that there are registry entries that are not installing properly. This would cause the crash of the exe's I had mentioned before. - It could be; do you have an old backup registry. When you used CC cleaner, did it back up your registry, if so, reinstall it, clean it using only the kodak software.

When I uninstalled the Kodak program I used their clean unistall program as well as CCleaner. - If you reinstalled the backup registry, just use the "Kodak" program to clean the registry. If you don't have a backup registry, just use the Kodak program anyway. Do not use the other reg cleaner.

I also tried running the program in XP mode once. - Try running it in admin mode. forget XP mode (for now).

15 I have the printer working by connecting it to a network printserver made by CablesToGo. It will print but I cannot use any of the scan abilities or other features. - Again, software problem, not driver problem.

So...fiscokid's problem looks like a software communication problem between the Kodak software, not driver issue, and Vista.

Draclvr - I'm still not sure what's going on with your problem, but based on your concerns about the HP printer not being seen either, makes me suspicious of the USB ports. Since you don't physically have the computer, It would be hard to diagnose though. I would also look at some of the things fiscokid has tried, especially cleaning the registry with the Kodak software, then reinstall the program using the supplied disk only and go from there - This applies to you as well fiscokid.

At any rate... I noticed a firmware update for the ESP5 AIO, did you try installing it? If it does install? Is so, try installing the software/driver package afterwards and see what happens. You have the same issue as fiscokid...a software communication problem only. If that's the case, then I suspect that Kodak has some issues with there software package and Vista.

Also do you guys have admin rights? Right click the .exe and under the "Compatibility" tab make sure the "Run this program as an administrator" check box is checked, then install the program. Also make sure any virus program are turned off prior to installing the software.

And what versions of Vista are we running? 32 or 64-bit??? If either of the problem machines are running Vista x64, then then that is very likely the problem, and looking at Kodak's website, they don't have 64-bit support for those printers.

Let me know

You are echoing every single issue I'm having with this Dell Vista laptop and the Kodak printer.

Have you tried to install a different printer to see if you get a repeat?

An excellent idea!!!

As I stated, this is a 32 bit Vista OS. I also tried doing this under both "user" and "administrator."

Actually, I recommended to my friend that she take the computer and the printer to a local tech shop I trust. She has a USB wireless mouse which works perfectly in each of the ports on the laptop and there are no issues with any of them in Device Manager. So I just don't know where to go from here. Since she's already taken one printer back, I'm afraid this might happen with any printer she tries. She's so frustrated right now, I think she's about ready to chuck the laptop in the trash.

Sygnus, your suggestions have been the best advice I've gotten so far. Unfortunately, I've already done it all except for cleaning the registry with the Kodak software. It pains me greatly to admit that I've been beaten on this one.

Fiscokid, I sure hope you can get it resolved! If my friend does take it in to the shop, assuming they CAN resolve it, I will post back with a resolution.

My Computer

I must of not been clear with the HP 1320 printer. As soon as I plug the usb cable in for the HP printer it is seen and automatically installed with no problems. Vista is a clean install, there are no backup registry's. After using the Kodak clean uninstall program I noticed there were still references in the registry, hence the use of CCleaner. The computer is always in admin mode. It won't print a test page, it errors out. THe 3 exe's are running in task mgr and in services. Its got to be missing reg entries

My Computer

Well, then you got further than I did. When this Vista laptop recognized my HP 1350 printer, the same thing happened. The print jobs would just line up in the print queue, but not go to the printer.

Yup. Can't print a test page because you can't print anything - Printer Communication Error.

My Computer

Well, that's at least encouraging that you got the hp to print. My 1350 wouldn't, but I didn't have time to do anything more than let Vista install the drivers for it. That's what concerned me about ANY printer working on this laptop.

As I've said before, installing a freakin' printer is not supposed to be this hard...
