User profile

Hi,

I have an HP Pavilion with Vista Home 64. It is 5 weeks old. Last week, the seagate hd crashed. I took it back to Best Buy (warranty) and they put in a new drive. I told them NOT to install the OS, that I would, but they did anyway. When they did, they defined the default user profile as Owner. I want to change that. Several of the Word templates I use use that data in their autofill fields. I've only had the computer back 2 days and it is already driving me nuts (I use this computer for business and use those templates alot). I spent 1 1/2 on a chat with HP support tonight. They finally had me edit the registry entries for Registered Owner and put my name in that data field (it did say Owner before we edited it). I rebooted and guess what, the default user profile still says Owner, so I must need to edit some other place in the registry. I doubled checked and Word autofill still says Owner as well. Help.

Hello Wintert, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The only way to change the C:\Users\Owner folder name is to create a new administrator account, then delete the old C:\Users\Owner account from within the new account. Be sure to copy the contents that you want to save from the old accounts user folders into the corresponding new account's user folders to restore them to the new account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

P.S.
Is this you to?

Hi Brink,

No, the other post is not from me. I did notice it though and thought it was interesting that someone else had the same or similar question. I guess in changing that folder, it will make the changes I want? When I goto User Account/Manage Accounts, mine (the name Tracey) is the only one that shows up other than guest. However, if you click on Configure advanced user profile properties, there it says WINTER\Owner (WINTER is the computer name). It seems like I need to change that profile information. If I understand correctly, that will be achieved if I follow the instructions above?

Your current account will have two names tied to it since you had changed the account name previously in your first post. The Start menu will show the name that you changed it to, but the C:\Users\Owner folder will remain unchanged still.

Yes, doing the instructions above will give you a new administrator account with the name and user folder name you want (other then Owner and Tracey) instead. :)
