Ok, so I backed my important files up. I have all my program setups on my external hd. First off, will 32bit programs run on 64bit?
And should I do anything else than backup? Do I need to do anything before reinstalling?

yes 32-bit apps will work under x64, but not 32-bit drivers. Vista will install most (Windows Update).

I would ready the sound/video/Storage controller, and and any peripheral hardware drivers/software apps not part of the O/S for install

Insert your dell resource cd when after copying files from Vista DVD your are given option to install 3rd party drivers, navigate to the storage controller, then you will be returned to Install screen, switch back to Vista DVD.

Ok, I found the resource CD. Now what does this do? And What do you mean by storage controller?
thanks

The dell resource cd is the driver app cd for vista 32-bit installed on your pc. You have a scsi controller for your sata drives. these sata/raid drivers are not slipstreamed into your Vista x64 disk
When you insert disk, restart, hit any key to boot from disk, it will load files-afterwards you will be required to load the sata driver or the install will not complete (as vista will not see your Hard drive)

Another way around this is to go into the bios of your dell and switch the controller from ACHI to IDE. It will then install without loading 3rd party drivers. YOU MUST switch this back after installation and install the sata/raid/scsi controller.

When You come to your partitions screen( where do you want to Install screen), DELETE all partitions, and reinstall x64 Vista into unpartitioned space.

It will not matter that this controller is 32-bit. You just want Vista to see your drive/partition (you can locate/upgrade the x64 sata/scsi controller package after install)
