Lockup with sound loop, NO BSOD/Error report

Alright, so I have looked around, and this issue seems semi-common, though I have not seen a single solution for it.

At the moment, my computer will freeze randomly. The sound will loop on a very short wave (so it sounds somewhat like static, but its obviously not). I have looked in the reliability and performance monitor, and the freeze is not only not listed, it has the gall to list the fact that I had to use the reset button to unlock it!

I suspect bad hardware, but I cannot be sure. I play sound through my iPod (for music) and when it freezes, the music can still be heard (in addition to the loop). So the mobo seems to be alright (maybe?). My first suspect was bad RAM, but I don't have any other RAM to try in it right now (yeah I know, I'm slacking). I tried to do a repair, but the Vista disk claims there is not enough space to do a repair on the boot mgr partition (wth?). I have not had a change to try the /sfc scannow, but I will ASAP. I am currently reinstalling Seven on it, so its busy.

This issue had gone away a while ago, but seems to have come back so...

Anyways, what I have done:
Booted into safe mode and ran like 100 virus scans (clean)
Tried (and failed) a Repair

WILL try /sfc

Any ideas or solutions?

Hi Bob, I would tend to go for software, the first thing that comes to mind is too many apps running at the same time, it could also be a software conflict.
Have you recently installed new software? or maybe used a reg cleaner?

Well, all I have been running is City of Villains, Firefox, and Chrome all at once. Thats it....

It may indeed have been the registry cleaner I used.... Would sfc /scannow fix those errors? It will not let me repair...

Not quite sure, Try it

This would seem maybe more likely to be the problem, try running the programs seperately (if Poss) and in different combinations, maybe you will see a pattern.

Well, the other reason I don't think it is those programs, (and why I think it is a Vista problem) is because sometimes the freeze will happen at startup. When it is about to get to the log in screen. After I typed in my password before I even get to the desktop!

It is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING.

OK type msconfig in the Start Search, click on msconfig.exe accept the UAC go to the Services tab, put a tick in the box to hide all microsoft services, and disable all the rest. and then try to get it to stick again.

You could also test the RAM, but I think this is more hardware and would result in a blue screen.

You could also check your drivers

Well I did scannow, and I will let it sit for a while and see if that fixes it. If not, I will try the diagnostic boot and spend a week trying to figure out what is causing it >_<

Oh well. Thanks pooch, will let you know how it is coming.

Just to add to what Pooch is saying, here's a test which can give you a clearer indication of whether it's software or hardware...

1) Find and connect a PS/2 keyboard. (USB ain't as useful for this test, for reasons not simple to explain.)

2) Add "CrashOnCtrlScroll" registry value and reboot, as per:

3) Test (once) whether the Ctrl+ScrLk+ScrLk keystroke combo successfully triggers a bluescreen while the machine is running normally after a reboot. If so, you're ready for the actual point of the whole exercise...

4) The next time one of your lockups occurs, press Ctrl+ScrLk+ScrLk again. If a BSoD occurs, the lockup is almost certainly caused by software (and analysing a BSoD full dump would likely reveal the nature of the issue, as an exercise for the reader). Otherwise, if nothing happens despite you mangling Ctrl+ScrLk+ScrLk many times, the odds of a hardware defect just went up tenfold.

The i8042prt.sys PS/2 keyboard driver works at a very high internal priority level (IRQL) within the OS. If the cause of the lockup is somewhere in software, the driver should be able to override (almost) anything else that may be happening and successfully trigger a BSoD in response to that keyboard sequence.

Good luck with it.

Try connecting your hard drive to a different SATA port on your motherboard.

I've encountered this problem quite a lot over my last 3 computers and I've never found a proper solution. The last time I had it, switching SATA ports fixed it.
